Steve, 22, engineer:
GOOD

  • Letting a person finish what they are saying during a conversation – within reason!
  • Giving someone space when you’re waiting at, say, an ATM machine or behind someone in a queue so you don’t interfere.
  • Knocking the ball out of play when someone is obviously injured so they can get treatment (soccer etiquette!).

BAD

  • Eating with your mouth open.
  • Knocking into people and not saying ‘Sorry’.
  • Dropping litter or sticking chewing gum in the wrong places, such as under a table – we’ve all done it, but it’s just lazy!

Anthea, 19, student and part-time waitress:
GOOD

  • Hand writing a card or letter to say thank you.
  • Putting your knife and fork neatly together on the plate after a meal.
  • Remembering to put the toilet seat down, guys!

BAD

  • Treating a person serving you as if they don’t really exist.
  • Using a mobile phone when you’re being served or keeping others waiting (except in an emergency).
  • Leering at people (this one’s mainly a ‘boy’ thing!).

Stuart, 17, student:
GOOD

  • Saying ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’ as a general rule.
  • Opening the door for people who need you to (such as someone carrying a lot of stuff; someone with a pushchair).
  • Explaining calmly to someone - not shouting - if they don't understand your point or your advice.

BAD

  • Having dirty shoes on seats (clean shoes are ok, it seems!).
  • Being too “touchy feely” in public (with a boy/girlfriend).
  • Spitting, burping or breaking wind in public.
