Living space – Where do first years live?
‘I moved away to go to uni and like most first years lived in hall of residence. I shared with nine other girls and because we all liked the same sort of stuff became really good friends. In the second year I rented a house near the main campus with five of the girls. Living in halls is great way to meet lots of people and its fun living away from home’ Jennie, 21.

Budget, budget, budget - What do you spend your money on?
‘Going out…but be careful that don’t spend all your money in the first term or even worse the first week! I didn’t realise how much I was spending at first so had to work out a proper budget. It’s easily done because you are socialising so much meeting new people’ Rachel, 20.

‘There is serious stuff like food and rent but I tend to spend most on going out and new clothes. I work in a restaurant as well to give myself a bit extra because I think you need it. I don’t spend anything on books or stuff like that that’s what the library is for’ Mark, 20.

‘Student life doesn’t have to be expensive there are plenty of cheap supermarkets for food and student pubs near the uni but it can be hard living on a budget when you want to be out all the time with your friends’ Natasha, 21.

What do you and your friends do at night?
‘Go to pubs the student union is cheap and it’s right on campus so it’s always full and a great place to meet new people. It’s a good place to start a night out’ Phil, 22.

As well as making friends with the people you share with you will meet lots of people in the student union and in the student bars and nightclubs. They are usually quite cheap to go in as well with special student prices and promotions.
