Title: Brit art and design

Creative hotbed
Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson, Anish Kapoor, Chris Ofili and Steve McQueen all came out of UK art colleges to find success in their field. Art colleges have also been instrumental in a large number of the UK’s biggest names in rock and pop. Members of The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Pulp and more recent acts like Travis all met at Art college.

Artistic freedom
Jane Allan, Course co-ordinator at Glasgow School of Art points out, ’The mix of dedicated studio space and specialist theoretical teaching aimed specifically at artists and designers creates a focussed and professional atmosphere.’ Students are often taught by practising artists, designers and writers and the range of visiting professionals is unique.

Student’s experiences can be quite different from anything they have come across before. Lizzie who studied in Liverpool comments, ‘When I started my art degree I was given a space and told to start thinking about producing something - what would I like to do? After being led by teachers at school this was quite a change and a bit scary but allowed me to really think and be creative and I adapted very quickly.’

Designing a new UK
Design is another exciting creative field - could you come up with the next iconic design as British designer Jonathan Ive did with the i-pod? Or find that gadget or object that’s going to make everyone’s life easier?

Laurence Dawes, a third-year, 3D design student from the University of Plymouth has designed three products to slow people’s lives down, attempting to promote more interaction in our fast-paced society. Foe example, his Heartbeat pillows for lovers is a set of  two pillows which allows you to listen to your partners heartbeat - the idea being that the faster heartbeat will slow down to match the slower one.

What would you design to improve your life?
