Wade had devised comprehensive plans for opening up the Highlands and for making them much more accessible to English troops. Credit: britainonview/ Roz Gordon

Perthshire has a population of around 150,000 people and boasts the country's highest migration, attracting more than 1,500 people each year. It's one of the fastest growing areas in Scotland.

Renowned for its natural beauty, accessibility, history and community, Perthshire's economy depends on agriculture and the food and drink industry, as well as high-tech industries, digital media, insurance and bio-tech.

Hospitality and tourism are also important, generating in excess of £30 million and employing over 4,000 people.

The city of Perth sits on the banks of the River Tay in the very heart of Scotland, where the Lowlands meet the Highlands, only 44 miles from Edinburgh, 22 miles from Dundee and 64 miles from Glasgow. About 55,000 people live in Perth.

Historically, Perth was the Ancient Capital of Scotland and the nation's kings were crowned at Scone, just two miles away. More recently, it was the theatre in Perth that gave actor Ewan McGregor his first break!

Perthshire is home to one of Europe's last wilderness areas, Rannoch Moor, and recently took centre stage when it hosted the 2005 G8 Summit of world leaders at famous Gleneagles.
