Dundee is the fourth largest of Scotland's six cities. It sits on the north bank of the River Tay and is linked by road and rail to all the main networks throughout Scotland. It even has its own airport, with daily flights across the UK.
Dundee is famously known for jute, jam and journalism – historically the three most important industries in the city. Today, hi-tech, modern industries have replaced the factories and mills and Dundee is home to the Scottish computer games industry as well as a thriving bio-tech industry.
The city is still known for publishing and has produced many comic book characters, including Desperate Dan and Dennis the Menace. Dundee also has a growing reputation for arts and culture, with the Contemporary Arts Centre and the Dundee Rep Theatre both popular destinations for people all over Scotland.
Dundee is in the Tayside region, which has a population of 400,000 and covers 3,000 square miles. There are plenty of students in the area, with around 4,000 people graduating every year from the region's two universities and three colleges of further education.
Property prices are lower than average and Tayside has one of the lowest recorded crime rates in Scotland.
The area is particularly famous for its beautiful countryside. In fact, tourism in Tayside is responsible for 13,000 jobs and generates around £400 million every year, with people visiting to enjoy Championship golf courses, such as Carnoustie, whisky distilleries, trekking and wildlife.
