Mengambil Resiko

Taking part in sport, especially by celebrities, is an increasingly popular way of raising money for charity. The latest example is the Little Britain comedy star, David Walliams, who is planning to swim the English Channel to raise thousands of pounds. He has been swimming four hours a day to shape up for the 21-mile (13 km) journey in July. A friend said: ‘David is taking this very, very seriously. A team of experts is helping with his training.’ The filmed bid will hopefully be made in time for BBC television's Sport Relief programme on 15 July, subject to weather and tides.

Running for fun
Running is one of the most common ways of raising money through sport. The Sport Relief Mile is the focal point of the BBC Sport Relief fundraising programme. 81,000 people took part in the 2004 event. The London Marathon, besides being a serious race for the professionals, attracts hundreds of ordinary people running for charity. Some dress in costume, as rabbits or fairies.

This year David Sullivan went round the course playing golf shots. He used a rubber golf ball to avoid injuring fellow competitors. Sponsored fun runs are a common part of fundraising events. Sponsored walks are even commoner, often by children, or people who don't normally walk very far.

Oars and snorkels
The television presenter Ben Fogle and the Olympic gold medal-winning rower James Cracknell have rowed across the Atlantic for charity. Their television series, Two men in a boat, was very popular. Fogle commented: ' We are absolutely amazed by the amount of support that we received from everybody and the amount of money that has been raised for Children In Need.' Even the world's dirtiest sport, bog snorkelling, donates all proceeds raised at their world championships at Llantwrtyd Wells, in Wales, to charities.
