Our values

Our five values guide what we do and how we work

Integrity means wholeness. Everything we do, and the way we do it, should fit together seamlessly. No contradictions, no papered-over cracks, no hidden sub-texts. What you see is what you get. Personal integrity is as important as institutional integrity. Everything each one of us does, and the manner in which we do it, reflects on the work, the vision and the character of the British Council. We are integral to our work and it to us.

Professionalism is the bundle of qualities that characterizes a serious, skilled and dedicated intercultural communicator and achiever. It is centred in respect for self, and for others, and is expressed through well- developed skills and a solid foundation of shared knowledge. A British Council professional is approachable, trustworthy, consistent, accountable, responsible, competent and imaginative.

Valuing People means honouring, respecting and appreciating every person we encounter as an individual. It means esteeming both differences and commonalities, and recognizing skills, intuitions and experience in the many forms they take. We look beyond, without ignoring, and value, without patronizing, diverse backgrounds, cultures and life experiences. We recognize talent, potential and achievement in any form, whether found in familiar or unexpected places.

Mutuality is the expression of one of the central truths of cultural relations: that all substantial and effective relationships, whether intercultural or not, are built on the exchange of ideas, confidences and, above all, trust. In short, mutuality is the desire for true interpersonal equality.

Creativity lies at the intersection of imagination and curiosity. It is a magical process which involves the unleashing of human potential in the solution of problems— large and small. Creativity imagines and executes great art; it amplifies and develops simple skills in new ways; it maps out new paths to new goals. By being open-minded, hungry for experience and ready to risk the unexpected, we prepare ourselves to be creative. Then we take the plunge – and create new value.
