2012 Olympics to be greenest ever

A new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and BioRegional has said the London 2012 Olympic Games will be the greenest ever. However, the report* warns of failures to meet sustainability targets in important areas.

In 2005, the two organizations and the London 2012 organizers teamed up. They created "a framework for the most sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games ever". Their report was called "Towards a One Planet Olympics" because "we only have one planet…and we need to respect the environment and people".

The 2005 report included 76 promises to create "the greenest Games ever". Most of these will be fully or partially met. Even McDonalds is going green. The restaurant giant will serve millions of meals of locally caught fish and local meat in recyclable containers.

All McDonald's cooking oil will become biodiesel to power its trucks. Friends of the Earth were happy with the decision to create few car parking spaces, which means everyone will take public transport or walk.
