Traction Man is here
by Grey, Mini
Barcode # 041011

With an action outfit for every occasion, Traction Man patrols the house. Whether he is saving toys (in latex space suit and Perspex helmet, teamed with Rocket Boots); searching the sink for the lost wreck of the sieve (in sub-aqua suit, fluorescent flippers and infra-red mask) or rescuing damsels in distress (in jungle pants, camouflage vest and a bandanna), Traction Man is never less than stylishly turned out and expertly accessorised. He is the last word in heroic fashion flair - until, that is, the day that he is presented with an all-in-one knitted green romper suit and matching bonnet by his owner's granny. Can Traction Man overcome the humiliation of his desperately dowdy new look and rediscover the action hero within or will the burden of the knitted green monstrosity be too great?

Amazing disgrace
By  Hamilton-Paterson,  James
Barcode # 040765

Gerald Samper is a ghost-writer to the stars: rock singers, racing drivers and ski champions. And to Millie Cleat, the monstrous one-armed sailor, whose round-the-world voyage has made her the toast of Britain, and who has become the poster-girl for the Deep Blues, a mystical and nutty environmental group. Gerald pines for greater things, however, and would prefer to write the memoirs of Max Christ, the celebrated conductor. While he schemes to land this unattainable catch, he muses hilariously and viciously on the world of which he is such an unwilling part, looking out from his Tuscan hilltop and pining for his neighbour Marta, offspring of a crime family from Voynovia, who disappeared one day into thin air.

The Amnesia Clinic
by  Scudamore,  James
Barcode # 040763

Anti, a quiet English boy living in Quito, Ecuador, strikes up a friendship with flamboyant classmate Fabian, who is everything Anti isn't: handsome, athletic and popular. What's more, he lives with his rakish Uncle Suarez, while Anti is stuck in the dull ex-pat world inhabited by his parents. Rich in South American colour, this cleverly crafted novel deals with storytelling itself - the motivations for spinning a yarn and the consequences of taking a tale too far...

Band of Eagles
by   Barnard,  Jack
Barcode # 040720

Continuing the brilliant World War Two fighter pilot series - this time the theatre of war is the incredible story of the Siege of Malta. Summer 1941. The tiny island of Malta, held by the British and a crucial supply point for the Allies, has become the most bombed place on earth. The Germans and Italians want to destroy it. For the fighter pilots of the RAF, initially equipped with ageing Hurricanes and outnumbered in the air, defeat seems almost certain. Flight commanders, Englishman Kit Curtis and American Ossie Wolf make an unlikely alliance. Both have survived the Fall of France and the Battle of Britain but Curtis remains idealistic and eager to prove himself. Wolf, by contrast, is ruthless and thrives in the chaos of imminent invasion. But as each man is tested to the limit, they come to share a common purpose and fresh understanding. The experiences of these pilots and their comrades are vividly conveyed in a novel of compelling pace and power, made still more real by meticulous research that captures the spirit of the time. By turns brutal, funny, tragic and heroic here is a spell-binding tour-de-force, a brilliant sequel to the best-selling Blue Man Falling.

Careless
by   Robertson, Deborah
Barcode # 040732

There are multiple layers in this story: the interrelated stories of strangers; the way events can result in coincidences; and the tragedies and triumphs of life. As a good story, this novel works well. As an examination of lives it works even better. But its real strength is in the evocative and imaginative use of language An outstanding debut novel that is as moving as it is wise by an award-winning short story writer.

Chameleon and other stories
by   Bryce, Jane
Barcode # 040823

When a young white child discovers why her family's African gardener so dislikes the chameleon she spots in a tree, she is plunged into a puzzled awareness of the complexities of race, colour and difference. As the 'I' of the stories grows into adulthood in Nigeria, she too becomes a chameleon of sorts, one thing when she is with her Nigerian friends, another with the white tribe when she can no longer resist the lure of the scarce luxuries to be had at the British embassy. When the 'I' makes the crossing from Nigeria to the Caribbean, she discovers that it is not only people who are chameleons. Osun, the Yoruba orisha has also made the journey, a little outwardly changed, but inwardly the same in Trinidadian and Cuban manifestations. In the earlier stories, the 'I' has a childhood innocence that, in the comment of the distinguished poet UA Fanthorpe, 'sees all the better for not understanding'. With increasing awareness comes a sense of being an outsider in almost all situations, though in playing mas' in the Trinidad carnival, there is a glimpse of the transcendence of belonging to the collective. Whether as the child trying to understand her parents, their Muslim servant's sense of the sacred, or the 'incomprehensible prohibitions' of a colonial childhood, there is a constant tension between the sense of separateness and the desire for belonging. And though each of the stories is a first person narrative, what stands out in Bryce's careful, elegant writing is a very concrete sense of the reality and autonomy of other voices, other views.

Chart Throb
by   Elton, Ben
Barcode # 040723

A biting social satire of one of the world's most popular cultural phenomena from the bestselling author of The First Casualty.  "Chart Throb" is the ultimate pop quest. Ninety five thousand hopefuls. Three judges. Just one winner. And that's Colin Simms, the genius behind the show. Colin always wins because Colin writes the rules. But this year, as he sits smugly in judgement upon the mingers, clingers and blingers whom he has pre-selected in his carefully scripted 'search' for a star, he has no idea that the rules are changing. The 'real' is about to be put back into 'reality' television and Colin and his fellow judges (the nation's favourite mum and the other bloke) are about to become ex-factors themselves. Ben Elton, author of "Popcorn and Dead Famous" returns to blistering comic satire with a savagely hilarious deconstruction of the world of modern television talent shows. "Chart Throb" is about one winner and a whole bunch of losers.

by   Banks, Lynne Reid
Barcode # 040777

A medieval tragedy and tale of retribution -- The Dungeon is a powerful story from a writer of great skill and potency. The setting is medieval Scotland, a land dominated by skirmishes and battles on the borders, a land of fortresses and castles in Scotland, England and Wales. We meet Bruce McLennan, a Scottish laird, a man sorely-changed by a terrible family tragedy. But while the dungeon is being built, McLennan plans a trip to the far ends of the earth. As we follow McLennan on his travels to China and beyond, we witness his buying of Peony, or Mudan, as her Chinese name is, a young girl who McLennan uses as a slave. He is uncaring, unsympathetic, as he drags her after him across the world. Gradually, knowing no other, Peony develops a kind of affection for her master. In Scotland, Peony meets Fin, a stable lad and a loving friendship develops between them. McLennan, busy fighting off enemies, uses Peony in an horrific scene in one of his battles; he looses badly and subsequently blames her. He decides to punish her by throwing her in his dungeon...then unfolds a ghastly scene where Peony kills herself, at last in control of her own destiny. McLennan dies of guilt, shame and remorse. You are in a job you do not enjoy. You are surrounded by colleagues you do not respect. You feel you can do better. Your life feels directionless. You feel trapped. You drink to take your mind off it all. You dread Mondays. You hate your alarm clock with a passion. You worship Friday afternoons. You cherish the weekend. You loathe the inevitability of ironing, always ironing. You assess where you are going on every Sunday. You know you're not the big fish. You wonder if you ever want to be. You are stuck on repeat. You are in an endless cycle of working, drinking and making coffee. You want a way out. You want to escape this way of thinking. You want to enjoy life, all the time. You want fulfilment. You want freedom. You want to read this book. In a large London law firm, trainee solicitor Denton Voyle contemplates why he is pursuing a career in law. Every Sunday afternoon, with nothing better to look forward to than the ironing, he questions his miserable, listless, alcohol fuelled existence and wonders if the pursuit of being the big fish could ever really satisfy him. Lethal Intent
by   Jardine, Quintin
Barcode # 040805

This is a worthy follow up to the previous books in the series. While it's not groundbreaking or original in the Skinner theme it's very readable to fans of the series. A previous reviewer mentioned about his wife's infidelity, it must be remembered that he hasn't exactly been spotless himself so they've put up with each others. This book does continue to develop the characters and you become as interested in them as you do in the plot surrounding the crime.

However, perhaps all is not what it seems as Kate begins to detect something amiss to the Seagraves. Can it be that beneath the facade of this perfect suburban calm lies secrets as dangerous as any inner city? Is everything, is anything, as it seems?

The Lost City
by   Shukman, Henry
Barcode # 040730

A former soldier, invalided out of the army because of a horrific and traumatic incident, Jackson Small goes on a journey into the Peruvian jungle in search of a lost city of an ancient race. The reasons for his trip are however rather more complicated. As well as doing it out of personal interest in the culture, he feels he has to make the journey as a pilgrimage for a dead colleague. But when he is robbed of all his equipment, money and provisions early in the trip, he is forced to undertake an undercover military operation in the dangerous, lawless region ruled by a major drug baron. Along the way he meets many characters who propose other alternative ways of living. A young Peruvian boy latches onto him, accompanying him on his journey, and Jackson finds some sense of purpose in looking after the child. He meets and falls in love with a young American girl Sarah, who helps the young man overcome his shyness and the pain of his past. He meets a priest who dedicates himself to the poor people of the region and he meets Sarah's uncle, who has abandoned the Western lifestyle for a purer way of living in the Amazonian wilderness. He also meets people dedicated to political causes, people that because of his military past he can't escape. Eventually, he has to make his own way to the outcome of his quest. There are a lot of contradictions in Henry Shukman's new novel, bu t in this case it's a good thing. A thriller, a love story, a journey of personal discovery - each of the different elements blend together extremely well and give the book an unexpected depth and lyricism. The author's own experience as a travel writer with an interest in exploring and learning from ancient cultures (Sons of the Moon: A Journey in the Andes) undoubtedly contributes greatly to the authenticity and the keenness in the description of his character's discoveries in the Peruvian rain-forests. The major discoveries however are clearly more personal than archaeological and Shukman is equally adept at pinpointing their intricacies in this exciting, intelligent and satisfying novel.

Anne of Green Gables
Barcode # DV1514

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her", answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots", and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college. Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something". Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman.

The Bee Gees, : One Night Only
Barcode # DV1587

Taped as a lavish cable television special in 1997, One Night Only trades on the Bee Gees' shape-shifting career as pop survivors. Over the course of 111 minutes, this straightforward concert, produced at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and groomed for both video and CD posterity, sprints through 31 songs from their past three decades. Even after the inevitable disco jokes are expended, and the jaundiced viewer contemplates the role hats, hairspray, and comb-overs now play in dressing the once stylishly long-haired troika, the Gibb brothers' signature vocal harmonies and hook-laden song craft beg respect. Casual listeners can't be blamed for equating the Bee Gees with the dance floor bonanza they reaped through 1978's Saturday Night Fever, yet that commercial zenith was actually the culmination of a comeback for a group that had seemed washed up by the early 1970s. One Night Only thankfully takes an even-handed view of both their original late 1960s hits ("Massachusetts", "To Love Somebody", "Lonely Days"), building from a cannily Beatle-browed vocal sound, and the 1970s blue-eyed soul ("Jive Talkin'", "Nights on Broadway") that led them naturally into disco. The Fever hits are here, as are Gibb originals that clicked for other acts; the family circle also widens for a posthumous duet with their late brother, Andy Gibb, while Celine Dion gets star billing in the collaborative "Immortality".

The Bee Gees, The Official story
Barcode # DV1586

A story of the Bee Gees told in their own words, features interviews with the Gibb brothers and other key people including George Martin. Also features home videos, archive footage, family photos and key performances.

Being Julia
Barcode # DV1573

Despite being a successful actress, below the surface Julia Lambert is deeply troubled by her disloyal husband and her estranged son. Happiness finally appears to enter her life in the form of her son's friend Tom, but when she realises that he has an ulterior motive, she seeks revenge... Annette Bening's outstanding performance is the best reason to see Being Julia, a highly melodramatic adaptation of the 1937 novel Theatre by W. Somerset Maugham. With a prestigious pedigree (director Istvan Szabo and screenwriter Ronald Harwood share impressive theatrical backgrounds) and a stellar cast including Jeremy Irons, Bruce Greenwood, and Juliet Stevenson, the film's backstage and onstage theatrics take place in pre-World War II London, when the venerable actress Julia (Bening) fends off middle-age by romancing a stage-struck young American (Shaun Evans) in a calculated attempt to retain some youthful vitality while airing her own dirty laundry onstage in a glorious act of divine diva behavior. Treating life and theater as one big play in which she's the perpetual star, Julia's nothing if not a master thespian, and Bening's got all the chops to keep her in the spotlight. If the film isn't quite worthy of Bening's excellence, at least it gives her performance the showcase it deserves.

Black Books  Complete Series
Barcode # DV1557

One of the few genuinely outstanding British comedy shows of the past decade, Black Books unites excellent comedic performances, very funny scripts, and plenty of rewatch value.

The concept is simple enough. Bernard (expertly played by Dylan Moran) runs a bookshop. The only problems are he can't stand people, hates customers, and would far prefer to be barking out cutting remarks and drinking wine. Still, it's after drinking much of the aforementioned wine that he offers Manny (Bill Bailey, again in terrific form) a job. Manny accepts, and finds his daily life involves taking abuse from Bernard, while remaining strangely and resolutely upbeat. Fran (Tamsin Greig) meanwhile also likes her wine, and finds herself stuck between the two of them, with a few odd encounters of her own thrown in too. So far nothing particularly out of the ordinary, right? Well, mix in some of the creative force behind Father Ted, combine those aforementioned performances, and simmer to the point where episode after episode garners a cocktail of sniggers and belly laughs, and you have something really rather special. Like many of the best shows, the curtain has come down on Black Books after only three series. But the long-lasting legacy are episodes that are set to be enjoyed for a long, long time to come. From Graham Linehan, co-writer of 'Father Ted', comes a new cult comedy set in a second hand bookshop. Dylan Moran stars as the bohemian, and frequently drunk, owner who has one major problem with his line of work: he hates customers. Help is soon at hand, however, in the form of mild-mannered Manny (Bill Bailey), who proves to be something of a star at selling books, and Fran (Tamsin Greig), who owns the shop next door...
