Above London by Cameron, Robert; Cooke, Alistair Barcode # 009675
Robert Cameron and Alistair Cooke teamed up to produce a wonderful visual account of London in the late 20th century, a stunning piece that will serve as a guide for generations of what London was like during this period. The first plates show maps from the Middle Ages, and the same aerial view today, side by side: one can see some of the same streets and patterns, a bridge in the same location, but also (naturally) great differences. The pattern of Chelsea remains as a framework from the days of the Duke of Beaufort in some ways (including Cheney Walk), and very different in others. A French drawing of St. James' Park looks very familiar, with the difference being the absence of Admiralty Arch which helped transform the Mall into one of the great processional routes.

The Public Sphere by McKee, Alan Barcode # 043417
What is happening to public debate in Western cultures? Is our public sphere disintegrating? In the face of popular tabloid newspapers, new forms of reality television and an increasing lack of respect for traditional authorities, many critics are concerned that our society no longer has a rational, informed and unified space where everyone can communicate about the issues that affect us all. In this book Alan McKee answers these questions by providing an introduction to the concept of the public sphere, the history of the term and the philosophical arguments about its function. By drawing on many examples from contemporary mediated culture, McKee looks at how we communicate with each other in public - and how we decide whether changing forms of communication are a good thing for the 'public sphere'.
Rachel White read: embankment by Wood, Catherine Barcode # 043553
The internationally renowned sculptor, Rachel White read is to be the latest artist to take on the challenge of Tate Modern's vast Turbine Hall in autumns 2005, following in the footsteps of Bruce Neumann’s haunting sound installation Raw Materials. White read is an appropriate choice for the commission as some of her best-known works have seen her engaged in a dialogue with architecture and public space. Her first large-scale public project, House, in 1993 was a concrete cast of a nineteenth-century terraced house in the East End of London that during the relatively short period of its existence became an international icon. She has since completed further site-specific projects, including the hauntingly simple Holocaust Memorial in Judenplatz, Vienna; Water Tower in New York; and Monument, an inverted clear glass plinth installed on the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. The physical representation of memory and absence is key to Whitbread’s work and, by frequently destroying the original object in the casting process; she explores the theme of loss. Installation in the Turbine Hall, from inception through to completion. With stunning illustrations and photography throughout, this will be a fascinating record of what promises to be one of the most challenging commissions yet faced by this intriguing artist.

Urban Grimshaw and the Shed Crew by Hare, Bernard Barcode # 043416
The (true) story of Urban Grim Shaw reads like fiction of the highest order. The events are, by turn, hilarious and deeply moving. The milieu is similar to Irvine Welsh's 'Train spotting' but Hare's narrative voice is more accessible and, if anything, more assured. Hare, like James Zelman, has worked and lived with the community he documents; he shares many of their values and, although the book is permeated with a sense of outrage at the destruction of the social fabric caused by the Thatcher years its vitality, energy and sheer comedy give one hope. The 'characters' in the book have much to offer, but they are easy to demonize and, as Hare discovers, hard to help. The question is who, beyond the level of the individual, is prepared to help in a world where social structures have collapsed. Although assisted by BBC journalist, Fergal Keane who’s 'A Stranger's Eye' visits the same area of inner-city Leeds, Hare has produced a book with much wider appeal. The book is a compelling read which, like all good stories, has its own momentum.

Will: the autobiography of Will Greenwood by Greenwood, Will Barcode # 043560
The autobiography of the most outspoken member of the English rugby team explores the highs and lows of his remarkable life in rugby, and his eventful life off the pitch. Known as Shaggy to his mates, Greenwood is one of the sport's most engaging, intelligent, outspoken and witty characters. A Lancastrian to the tips of this size 12 boots, the giant centre has been and automatic choice in the England XV since his debut against Australia in 1997. A few months earlier he looked set to become only the third uncapped Englishman to play for the British Lions when he came within a whisker of losing his life after he was speared to the ground in a heavy tackle, lost consciousness and swallowed his tongue. After taking several months to recover him quickly made and impact at international level following a widespread clamor in the press for his call-up to the England side. An elegant riposte to the old jibe that England players lack guile and imagination, the Harlequins' and former Leicester centre has brought a shimmering, magical quality to his team's back play, opening up defenses with clever angled running, superb distribution and a gravity-defying ability to stay up in the tackle. Playing a central role in the team's dramatic triumph in Australia four years later. His life off the pitch has been no less eventful, he and his wife Caro having experienced extreme despair and joy in recent years with the loss of one son, Freddie, and the birth of another, Archie. Greenwood takes time to reflect in this revealing, honest, funny and moving book.

Hamlet (Longman Literature Shakespeare) by Shakespeare, William Barcode # 043672
Julius Caesar (Longman Literature Shakespeare) by Shakespeare, William Barcode # 043632 One of Shakespeare's most political plays, Julius Caesar continued Shakespeare's interest in Roman history, first developed in Titus Andronicus. Drawing on Plutarch, the great historian of Rome, Shakespeare dramatises one of the most crucial moments in Roman history--the assassination of Julius Caesar. Loved by the Roman crowd but increasingly feared by the Senators, Caesar increasingly shows signs of his desire to abolish the Republic and crown himself emperor. A conspiracy is hatched, led by Cassius and Brutus, who murder Caesar on the steps of the Capitol. Mourning over his dead friend's body, Mark Antony gives one of the famous rhetorical speeches in literature, asking "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" to lament Caesar's death, privately vowing to "let slip the dogs of war" against those who have shed Caesar's blood. Antony joins forces with Caesar's son Octavius to defeat Cassius and Brutus in battle, and establish an uneasy alliance whose collapse is dramatized in Shakespeare's later play Antony and Cleopatra. Written at the end of Queen Elizabeth's reign, Julius Caesar has been seen by many as a radically pro-Republican play which sailed close to the political wind of the time.

Mind Wide Open: Why You Are What You Think by Johnson, Steven Barcode #043561 A highly entertaining, thought provoking, and pleasant read. It's sort of a blend of science and popular philosophy, the musings of a creative and bright guy. Mr. Johnson addresses a subject that is of great interest to me, namely neurotransmitter systems such as serotonin, nor epinephrine, and dopamine. He also touches upon Peter Kramer's "Listening to Prozac" and the neurotransmitter personality model of C. Robert Cloninger. Mr. Johnson points out that low serotonin may be the cause of the psychological condition of rejection sensitivity, although this may actually be caused by a high level of nor epinephrine as well. My only significant criticism is that Mr. Johnson may be speculating a bit much, and making somewhat of sweeping generalizations to suit his own ideas.
