CAMBRIDGE ESOL CELTA COURSE
Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Whether you are a trained teacher in another discipline, or you have never taught before, you can now qualify to teach English by doing the CELTA course at the British Council Yangon.

WHAT IS THE CELTA?

The CELTA, or Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is a passport to teaching and working around the world. Administered by Cambridge University, it is the most widely recognised international qualification for English teachers. With a CELTA you may find yourself working in a summer school, as a Business English teacher, or on pre-sessional university courses. The possibilities are endless.

WHAT DOES THE CELTA CONSIST OF?

Input sessions

This covers sessions on language awareness, phonology, class management, learners, strategies and techniques for language teaching and learning, materials and in depth analysis of the four skills.  At British Council Yangon, we also tailor sessions according to trainees’ emerging needs as the course progresses.

Teaching practice

Trainees are divided into 2 groups, 1 group teaching elementary and 1 group teaching intermediate. They change half way through to get experience at the different levels. Each trainee teaches for a total of 6 hours.

Observations

You are also required to observe a minimum of 6 hours of lessons with experienced teachers and the course tutors.  At British Council Yangon, this is done before trainees start their assessed teaching practice.

Assignments

There are 4 assignments to be completed. These focus on:

Adult learners and learning contexts
The language system
Language skills
Reflection on classroom teaching and identifying action points

Tutorials

Tutorials are held twice during the course.  In these your performance and areas that need to be worked on are discussed with your tutor.

An external assessor visits the centre at the end of the course. To ensure that the course is administered according to requirements set by the University of Cambridge ESOL.
