Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

Academic Technology Approval Scheme, also know as ATAS, effective from 1st November, is a certificate required to apply for non-EU/EEA nationals who are planning to take post graduate study in the UK in certain science, engineering or technology discipline. The certificate needs to be acquired before the candidate apply for visa, Entry Clearance(EC) or Extension of Stay(EoS). ATAS application forms can be obtained from the ATAS website or by just mailing a request at atas@fco.gov.uk.The majority of ATAS application will be processed within 10 working days from the date that the application is received.

The purpose to introduce ATAS is to stop the spread of knowledge and skills that could be used in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and their means of delivery. The ATAS is designed to ensure that people who are applying to study certain sensitive subjects in the UK do not have links to WMD programmes.

We would like to express that the UK remains open and committed to providing access to high quality education for all nationalities. Hence, the over-riding aim of the scheme is to prevent access to sensitive technology and not to stop genuine students from going to the UK to study.
