For over 60 years the British Council has been collecting works of art, craft and design to promote the achievements of British artists, craft practitioners and designers abroad, and has now grown to a collection of more than 8000 works. The Fifth Curator competition is a unique new opportunity for an aspiring curator to select an exhibition of works from the British Council Collection. We are looking for someone who is based permanently outside the UK, who believes they have the passion and knowledge to be a leading curator. The winning curator will be given unlimited access to the Collection, which includes over 8500 key works of British art and the resulting exhibition will be shown at the prestigious Whitechapel in London in April 2010. The Fifth Curator competition forms part of the British Council’s ongoing commitment to promote the Collection to new audiences, both in the UK and worldwide and to engage aspiring curatorial talent with one of Britain’s finest collections of British Art. As part of a project supported by the European Union, SPACE (Supporting Performing Arts Circulation in Europe) Network is providing a professional and mobile European training programme to improve knowledge and understanding of the distribution of performing arts throughout Europe. There are places for 30 individuals to undergo a 16 month training programme. The working language of the training programme will be English. Applications are sought from young professionals working in the administration, production or touring of performing arts and who are interested in improving their understanding of this work.
