Researchers in Society (RISE) was an ambitious programme of events run by us with funding from the European Commission's 'Researchers in Europe' (RiE) initiative.
RISE set out to foster improved communication and mutual respect between researchers and the public. It aimed to raise the profile of Science researchers highlighting the importance of their contribution to many aspects of society and making them feel more valued. We hope that the programme has inspired more young people to view a career in research as exciting and worthwhile.
If the European Union is to become the world's most competetive and dynamic knowledge-based economy by the end of the decade, it is estimated that we will need between 600,000 and 700,000 new researchers. Yet Europe faces an ageing, male dominated research population and a high and rising drop out rate among science undergraduates. Moreover, the general public feels increasingly disconnected from science and there is widespread disinterest in the subject among young people.
RISE events provide a space for encounters between dynamic, successful and often young researchers and the public. Cafes Scientifiques, Science in Schools and Youth Conferences offer an opportunity to discuss and learn first hand about the important role science research has on the social, economic and political fabric of Europe. It is hoped that the events will encourage more young people to consider a career in the field.
Building on the success of past collaboration with the European Commission, the British Council also organised social evenings through existing Network UK ‘mobility centres’ for young foreign researchers and local communities. The evenings help to create a socially integrated network of ‘mobile’ post-doctoral researchers where the exchange of information, ideas, knowledge and the sharing of experiences will assist their stay and strengthen their collective voice.
