International Workshop in Brasilia
2006

The recent publication of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report (IPCC) warning about the effects of climate changes and confirming the human damage on environment, initiate global debate on communication media.

Articles, reports, books, films, publications in general were launched to arouse awarness and interest from people about the topic.

Despite the importance of information, the need now is to enable communications to change behaviours and stimulate attitudes.

This was the challenge offered to around 200 professionals on the last April 19th in Curitiba during the workshop promoted by British Council in partnership with Federation of Industries of Parana (FIEP), UNINDUS and Climate Change Forum of Parana State Government.

In a dynamic and interactive way, Lucy Shea and Sarah Perry, directors of Futerra Sustainability Communications, promoted the debate with practical tips on how communicate climate change for different audiences, communications channels and cases developed in UK.

Besides following global sustainable communication trends, participants, in groups, were invited to develop their own campaigns, gathering together the concepts presented and brazilian local reality.

“For us who are not directly involved in communication, workshops like this one are important to know how to be direct and get the target audience”, says a weatherman from SIMEPAR.

“The workshop was very useful. We recently did an event about climate change and now we realized how we should have done on communication and measurement. We certainly will do best on the next one”, evaluates another participant.

Also the event was a great opportunity to raise awareness about climate change issues to different society sectors. “This event is a oportunity to join content and information. The number of applications were higher than the vacancies, which shows the increase of society interest on debating global warmin.” concludes Parana State Secretary for Environment, Rasca Rodrigues, who opened the event.
