FRANK BURNETT

The International Director of Cheltenham Festivals and also Emeritus Professor of Science Communication in England, Frank Burnett, has been invited to deliver a presentation and take part in round tables during the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the Museum of Life in Rio de Janeiro. This is being done in partnership with the ABCMC (Brazilian Association Science Centres and Museums).

The activities in the Museum of Life will take place on May 19th to 23rd as you can see below:

May, 19th – National Forum of Science Centers and Museums: representatives from several science centers and museums in Brazil will meet to discuss a national policy for this field, and to develop strategies for greater national coordination.

May 20th and 21st – Meeting Creativity on Science Communication, including lectures and roundtables as an opportunity to discuss, think and share experiences, aiming to explore different strategies to engage the public on science and technology.

May 22nd and 23rd – A science festival will offer creative and innovative activities to the general public. There will be science shows, acting improvisation, several interactive activities, and games. Held outdoors at the “Parque da Ciência” (Science Park) and other areas of the Museum of Life, will involve several Brazilian institutions.

The Professor Frank Burnett will present on the 21st May to a wide audience and also take part in some activities on the following day.

Prof. Frank Burnet has played a leading role in promoting the discussion of the key issues facing individuals and organisations that undertake Science Communication activities, both within the UK and overseas. He was awarded an MBE in the 2000 Queen's Birthday Honours list and in 2002 became the first Professor of Science Communication in the UK. He published 30 papers in scientific journals. Member of the Royal Society’s Awarding Panel for grants to promote Public Understanding of Science [1996-1999] and expert evaluator for Raising Public Awareness of Science and Technology Programme of the European Commission [2001 - current]. Member of Communication and Information Committee; Economic and Social Research Council and Science and Society Advisory Board. Co-director of the Cheltenham Festival of Science, he delivered lectures for students and presented several drama performances.

Prof Burnett has worked with the British Council in Brazil before, as well as in Latvia and travelled to many countries as speaker and science communicator. Currently he is the international director of the Cheltenham Festivals and emeritus professor of Science Communication.
