Outstanding Science Initiative of the Year Award
Young scientist travelled to the United Kingdom under a prize supported by the British Council

In 2007, the second year of the partnership between the British Council and the National Research Council (CNPq), the winner of the category “The Exact Science, Earth Science and Engineering” of the 5th Outstanding Award of the year in Scientific Initiation will be awarded a trip to the United Kingdom to visit centres of excellence in science.

Last year, Carla Freitas, a 21 year old young researcher in the category ‘Life Science’ was awarded a trip to the United Kingdom, funded by the British Council. Carla visited centres of excellence in science such as the National Museum of Scotland and the Royal Museum (where the stuffed body of the sheep Dolly is). She also met with the renowned neuroscientist, Baroness Susan Greenfield (click here to see photos). Carla’s project was selected amongst over 400 works. This number of projects represents an increase of 160% in relation to the previous award edition.

During the next 5 years of partnership, we will support all three areas covered by the award (Exact Sciences, Earth Sciences and Engineering; Life Sciences; and Social and Human Sciences, Languages and Arts). The winners of the other two categories will each receive a year’s subscription to Nature magazine.

Our objectives

  • To encourage young Brazilians in further scientific studies and science-related careers.
  • To offer to the winner the opportunity to visit the UK and build relationships with renowned institutions in his/her area.
