For further details on the Chevening programme, write to Chevening@britishcouncil.org.br or contact the British Council office in charge of your state.
What's the Chevening programme?
Chevening is the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) scholarships programme, managed by the British Council worldwide.
What do I need to do to apply for a scholarship?
The first step is to visit  www.chevening.com or www.chevening.org.br, which has full details on the scheme.
What’s the next step?
If you meet the FCO criteria, you need to identify the institutions offering courses in your area of interest and take the IELTS English test. Research can be done on the Internet and the British Council can also help. The site www.educationuk.org contains links to university sites and to the BC offices in Brazil. Another useful site is www.hero.ac.uk/rae, which has the result of the Research Assessment Exercise carried out by the Higher Education Funding Council.
What happens after the institutions have been selected?
The applicant applies for a place on the chosen course/s and fills in the online application form.
WHICH BRITISH UNIVERSITIES are ELIGIBLE FOR THE SCHEME?
Almost all British universities are eligible, with very few exceptions. It is worth visiting the site Special Scholarships, which has details on co-sponsored awards with British universities and the private sector.
Do I need to have secured a place AT A BRITISH INSTITUTION before applying for a scholarship?
No, but this is desirable. Applicants should identify the courses and universities that fulfill their training requirements and include their names in the form. If an applicant has not secured a place yet, he/she should apply for it as soon as possible.
WhICH documents should I ATTACH WITH THE APPLICATION FORM?

When applying for the Chevening Scholarship online, it is not necessary to send any document. However, the IELTS test should be done within the calendar set for receiving applications in Brazil and the candidate should be prepared to send to the British Council, whenever requested, any of the following documents:

  • Copy of the undergraduate transcripts
  • Copy of the undergraduate degree certificate
  • Copy of certificates for each course of over 100 hours duration and which are connected with the candidate’s area of interest
  • Two referee’s reports, in English, in sealed envelopes and addressed to the British Council
  • Certified copies of your IELTS report, taken within the last two years
  • Copy of the offer letter sent by a British university to your chosen course

The minimum IELTS score for the Chevening programme is 6.5, but most universities require a higher score before offering a place on a master’s course.

* Most universities will require certified translations of transcripts and degree certificates which are not originally in English.

When will the results be announced?
The final results of the selection will be announced to applicants by post and by email before the end of April. This information will not be given out by telephone.
When will SUCCESSFUL applicants BEGIN THEIR studIES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM?
Usually around the end of September of the year following application, but dates may vary between departments and courses.
The United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.
