Last 27th and 28th January, in partnership with Cultura Inglesa which is the main EL private school in Brazil, we promoted the 3rd Summer Seminar for English Language Teachers aiming at teachers from the Public Sector.
As in previous years, the event happened in our premises during the school vacation, aiming to use the teacher’s free time to offer them training and new opportunities in ELT. It was a two-day event, in which 8 tutors delivered workshops voluntarily, for around 75 teachers.
The subjects approached included teaching methodology, classroom techniques, vocabulary and two special sessions, via video conference on Equal Opportunities and Diversity with Liz Fishwick, Coordinator of Public Programs at the Education Centre at the British Council Brussels, in Belgium and Ana Gonzalez, a visually impaired ELT trainer, who has a degree in English Language Teaching and a Masters in Teaching Literature in English from Venezuelan universities. This was a great opportunity for the teachers to know new ways to approach diversity in classrooms and in their lives. They were very interested and also felt very grateful to receive information on EO&D.
“We face diversity everywhere and everyday in our classrooms” said José Leonardo, a teacher commenting Ana’s presentation.
“I felt as I were in Brussels talking to Liz on equal opportunities and diversity” said Ednaldo Feijó after Liz’s presentation.
Almost all of the teachers reported their interest in getting more information about EO&D and do more under the diversity umbrella. In Brasilia, the president of the Braz-Tesol DF Chapter as well as leading ELT professionals watched Liz´s presentation via videoconference from the British Council head office.
- A session presented by Graeme Hodgson, Director English Language Brazil, via video conference from Brasilia about the Yes! Project, ELT Community and new tools to develop English language Teaching (e.g. e-English for Teachers and ETP).
- Access to international publishers such as Macmillan, Oxford, Pearson/ Longman, Richmond etc. Each publisher had a stand to promote their material during the two days of event. The publishers also had a moment to introduce themselves and present some material to the participants.
- Participation in raffles (prizes given by publishers, Cultura Inglesa and British Council)
