In 2004, the British Council brought to San Paulo VJ Anyone (Olivier Sorrentino) to participate in the 5th edition of the International Festival of Electronic Language (FILE - Festival Internacional de Linguagem Eletrônica).
VJ Anyone, one of the most important and representative VJs in the United Kingdom, presented himself in the FILE Symposium with a lecture about “what it is to be a VJ” followed by a performance from “The Pleasure Dome”, a live project, in audio and video, inspired by the cultural club, focusing on the amplification of the attention and involvement of the performance’s spectators. “The Pleasure Dome” created a space in which to develop calm and peace using colours and images that move in synchrony with the music.
Approximately 350 artists, from more than 30 nationalities, participated in this 5th edition of FILE, with group, collective and individual works. In addition to VJ Anyone, another 20 or so British artists were present at the diverse sessions of the Festival.
Works from the following areas were presented: net art, web art, interactive animation, hypertext, interactive web film, interactive cinema, panoramas, VRML, games, software art, generative art, artificial intelligence, robotics, music, performance and installation.
FILE is the only international festival in Brazil that exhibits aesthetic and cultural events produced on the Internet.
The 5th edition of FILE took place in the Cultural Centre of SESI during the months of November and December. The programming occupies the Art Gallery, the Theatre and the Mezzanine to receive the exhibition, performances, workshops and lectures.
The International Festival of Electronic Language is a Brazilian initiative, which, for five years, has been inserting the country into the world context of new medias, accomplishing a compilation of artistic productions in the field of electronic and digital art, and functioning as an indicator of the plurality of these productions. The participating works of FILE 2004 were the result of an intense research and selection process, which brought up a huge variety of national and international productions.
This 5th edition also brought the FILE SYMPOSIUM, which counted on the presence of VJ Anyone and VJs from other countries to discus the digital electronic culture in its international relations and also to amplify the discussion about the digital culture in its interdisciplinary extension. It was an open space for debate about new medias, which brought together artists, theoreticians and Brazilian and foreign researchers from the area of art-technology, with the objective of creating a new meeting place, other than that of the Europe/United States area.
This edition also presented the HIPERSÔNICA (Hypersonic), festival of electronic sound quality – a big party that takes place at the Casa das Caldeiras (House of the Boilers) with musical, resonant, visual and electronic art performances. Without worrying itself with the mainstream, Hipersônica launched sound quality and electronic music exponents in a multi-environmental event that counted on performances, DJs, VJs and erudite electronic musicians, emphasising primarily experimental productions.
