The British Council brought to Brazil the exhibition STILL LIFE showing new approaches by British contemporary artists to the subject that is one of the most traditional in western art. Alongside Still Life the exhibition NATUREZA MORTA presented works of renowned Brazilian on the same theme.
The exhibition was shown in São Paulo from August to November and in Rio de Janeiro from November to February 2005 and was conceived by the British Council with the intention of offering an open proposal with which curators and artists from other countries could interact.
Curated by Ann Gallagher from the British Council in London, 35 works of British contemporary art were presented, from both young and emerging artists and established artists with international reputations such as Patrick Caulfield and Mike Nelson. The works expressed the styles and static art that have emerged in the UK in the last decades, through many different forms of expresssion: painting, drawing, installation, video, photography and sculpture. The 40 Brazilian works, curated by Katia Canton, approached the genre by examining themes such as recipients, food, flowers and death. A real dialogue between contemporary British and Brazilian art was developed.
Britain artists in STILL LIFE were: Grupo Bank (Simon Bedwell, John Russell, Milly Thompson), Anna Barribal, Martin Boyce, Patrick Caulfield, Nigel Cooke, Anne Katrine Dolven, Roger Hiorns, Emma Kay, Christina Mackie, Mike Nelson, John Riddy, Jane Simpson, Simon Starling, Rebecca Warren, Gary Webb, Richard Wentworth, Wood and Harrison.
