The ABBA was founded in 1983 on the initiative of the British Council in Brasilia. Conceived as an informal association, its aim was to bring together people who had done post graduate studies in the UK. It now has more than 300 members, who meet up for a happy hour at the club of the British Embassy and on other occasions, such as cultural or art events. The new board, which officially took over at a recent party, comprises the following members:
- Chairman: Luiz Fernando Godinho (send an email)
- Vice chairman: Gustavo Tillmann
- Hudson Bueno
- Luiz Fernando Marques, Álvaro Tronconi, José Romildo Oliveira, Ana Lucia Magalhães.
The ABBA regulations set out the association’s objectives and structure in detail. Its purpose is to enable the production of culture, education and science; to contribute towards the defence, preservation and conservation of the environment and the support of sustainable development; to encourage voluntary actions in the areas in which it operates; to foster ethics, peace, citizenship and human rights, freedom of expression and opinion and other universal values; to help set up relationships between public and private entities in Brazil and the UK with a view to sustainable development and social responsibility within the ambit of the British Council and greater Brasilia.
