  • Department of Journalism
  • Journalism Studies (Web) – MA
  • MA Web Journalism
All our applied courses emphasise core, generic journalism skills and knowledge - writing, researching, interviewing, organising and structuring information - and then apply them to the different media platforms. This is achieved through media production to professional standards in a simulated workplace environment, work experience* and exposure to media professionals. Students examine a range of journalism issues - ethical, legal, historical, organisational - recognising that the best journalists are those who reflect on journalistic practice. These are flexible programmes of study aimed at those who wish to combine the practice of journalism with a greater variety of academic study. They are particularly appropriate for those who plan a career outside the UK.

University of the West of England

  • MA/Postgraduate Dip or Cert Cultural and Media Studies
The MA combines the analysis of media texts, practices and institutions, and technologies with the investigation of modern cultural formations. Where some MA courses make a distinction between the study of 'the media' and the study of 'culture', our MA seeks to highlight the complex inter-relations between the two. The study of cultural contexts and forms, cultural histories and methods of research provides students with the intellectual tools with which to engage in a wide-ranging analysis of the roles that media institutions and their practices may play in the cultures of everyday life. Similarly, we insist that media forms (and by this we would include older forms of media such as print media, as well as all those forms more usually associated with the media) are an essential resource for the study of culture
  • MA New Media
This MA is taught by a group of leading academics within the emerging field of new media studies. This innovative MA examines the relationships between new technologies, cultural change, identity and media institutions. From internet communities to everyday videogame play, from developments in digital broadcasting and film-making to theories of cyberculture, New Media is studied within the context of the School of Cultural Studies' expertise in the study of media and culture in general, and our pioneering work in the study of media, culture and technology in particular. The study of cultural contexts and histories, theoretical frameworks and methods of research, will provide you with the intellectual tools with which to engage in a wide-ranging analysis of the roles that new media technologies and their practices play in the culture of everyday life.

Brunel University

  • Globalisation, Communication and Culture MSc
The Globalisation, Communication and Culture programme seeks to offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of culture and communications practices within a global framework. Taken in their widest sense these can range from word-of-mouth 'gossip' to new communication technologies or 'experience' as a communicative process. A central concern of the course examines communication as a global and mediated space. Thus, the course develops a distinctive understanding of globalisation that considers the interrelationship between wider economic and political changes and specific socio-cultural developments in terms of 'interconnections', 'flows' and 'mobilities'.
  • Media and Communications MSc
This course examines the relationships between the media, processes of communication, and the technological developments involved in the transformation of media, communication and social interaction in the contemporary world. This MSc brings to bear the theories and findings of the social sciences in order to look behind the hyperbole at the social and cultural processes involved in modern communication systems.
