General English Cambridge ESOL Exams

These are the world's leading range of certificates for learners of English. Each year, they are taken by over two million people, in 130 countries and are widely recognised for work and study purposes. The exams are linked to the Common European Framework (CEF) of Reference for Languages, published by the Council of Europe. They are administered 3 times a year (March, June and December) and in Bosnia and Herzegovina you can take them in:

Banja Luka
Bijeljina
Mostar
Sarajevo
Trebinje

Chosing the right exam

Generally, the higher the level of exam, the more recognised, accepted and valuable it is. It is very important that you choose an exam at an appropriate level for you, otherwise you may find it too difficult and fail or too easy in which case the certificate will not correspond to your real proficiency level. We suggest you ask your English language teacher for advice.

Exam CEF Level* Level Description
KET A2 False beginners An elementary level exam, testing your ability to deal with basic written and spoken communications.
PET B1 Intermediate An intermediate level exam, testing your ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications.
FCE B2 Upper-intermediate An upper intermediate level exam - ideal if you can deal confidently with a range of written and spoken communications.
CAE C1 Advanced An advanced exam – if you can communicate with confidence in English for work or study purposes, this is the exam for you.
CPE C2 Expert A very advanced level exam - perfect if you have achieved a high level of language skills and are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context.

Registration

You can register for Cambridge ESOL exams at the British Council office in Sarajevo during the registration period:

SESSION REGISTRATION PERIOD LATE ENTRY PERIOD – 1st STAGE LATE ENTRY PERIOD – 2ND STAGE

To register for an exam each candidate will need to complete exam entry form.

Alternatively, your language school may opt to complete registration on your behalf, in which case block entry form will need to be submitted.

PAYMENT

Your registration is only valid upon payment of the fee. Currently, the only method of payment available in BiH is via bank transfer or postal order. Sample payment form is available here.

Please note that, in case of incomplete payment, your registration will be cancelled on the last day of the registration period without notification.

BEFORE YOUR EXAM AND ON THE TEST DAY

Upon successful registration, you will receive an invitation letter or email from us or your language school approximately three weeks before the exam/the first part of the exam. The letter will specify the date, time and venue for all parts of the test. Candidates who have not received the invitation letter 3 weeks before the date of the written part of the test should contact the institution where they registered for the exams (e.g. language school or the British Council).

Please read the information in the invitation letter or email carefully and follow all instructions.

On the test day(s), please be punctual and bring a valid picture ID (National ID card or passport).

RESULTS AND CERTIFICATES

Candidates who registered with language schools will receive both results and certificates from the school.

First, you will receive notification of results. Certificates for passing candidates will be issued after the results only to candidates with passing grades. Candidates first have a chance to collect them at the British Council as they may get damaged when sent via the post. When collecting your result in person, you need to produce a valid picture ID. If you want somebody else to collect the certificate on your behalf, this person needs to have an authorisation from the candidate and a valid picture ID.

ENQUIRY ON RESULT

If you are unhappy with your results you may apply for an Enquiry on Results procedure 3 weeks (at the latest) after the receipt of the result.

You can choose to have one or more test components re-marked.

For this you would have to complete a form (please contact us by e-mail below) and pay a fee of 82.00 KM. The fee is the same, no matter how many components are re-marked.

The full fee will be refunded if a result is changed to a higher band score. The re-mark is done in London by trained clerical markers and Cambridge ESOL-appointed senior examiners.

Email: exams@britishcouncil.ba

The request must be accompanied by a statement from a medical practitioner.
