General English Cambridge ESOL Exams

These are the world's leading range of certificates for learners of English. Each year, they are taken by over two million people, in 130 countries and are widely recognised for work and study purposes. The exams are linked to the Common European Framework (CEF) of Reference for Languages, published by the Council of Europe. They are administered 3 times a year (March, June and December) and in Bosnia and Herzegovina you can take them in:

Banja Luka
Bijeljina
Mostar
Sarajevo
Trebinje
Tuzla

Chosing the right exam

Generally, the higher the level of exam, the more recognised, accepted and valuable it is. It is very important that you choose an exam at an appropriate level for you, otherwise you may find it too difficult and fail or too easy in which case the certificate will not correspond to your real proficiency level. We suggest you ask your English language teacher for advice.

Exam CEF Level* Level Description
KET A2 False beginners An elementary level exam, testing your ability to deal with basic written and spoken communications.
PET B1 Intermediate An intermediate level exam, testing your ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications.
FCE B2 Upper-intermediate An upper intermediate level exam - ideal if you can deal confidently with a range of written and spoken communications.
CAE C1 Advanced An advanced exam – if you can communicate with confidence in English for work or study purposes, this is the exam for you.
CPE C2 Expert A very advanced level exam - perfect if you have achieved a high level of language skills and are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context.

SPECIAL NEEDS
For candidates with special needs, such as dyslexia, it is possible to make arrangements with Cambridge ESOL for extra time, large print, or Braille. Candidates must send their special needs requests before the end of the registration period accompanied by medical evidence. For special needs no late entries are accepted.
Payment

Your registration is only valid upon payment of the fee. Currently, the only method of payment available in BiH is via bank transfer. Sample payment form is available here.

Please note that, in case of incomplete payment, your registration will be cancelled on the last day of the registration period without notification.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Some candidates may have special requirements which make it difficult for them to demonstrate their ability in English. Examples include candidates with a permanent or long-term disability, such as hearing/sight impairment, dyslexia or a speech impediment; or with short-term difficulties such as a broken arm.

We can make Special Arrangements for them so that they can take the test on an equal footing with other candidates. The request needs to be supported by original medical documentation, which meets the following criteria:

bears the name, relevant qualification(s) and signature of a recognised practitioner
makes it clear how the disability justifies Special Arrangements
in the case of specific learning difficulties (i.e. dyslexia), evidence must include details of the degree of disability, must include an assurance that the evidence of specific difficulties was obtained through the results of appropriate and recognised tests, and a report must be provided by a fully qualified psychologist

The candidate also needs to fill out a Special Arrangements Request form, which will be emailed to him/her by the centre. For Cambridge ESOL exams the request has to be made at least 5 weeks before the registration deadline.

BEFORE YOUR EXAM AND ON THE TEST DAY

Upon successful registration, you will receive an invitation email from us or your language school approximately 10 days before the exam/the first part of the exam. The email will specify the date, time and venue for all parts of the test. Candidates who have not received the invitation email one week before the date of the written part of the test should contact the institution where they registered for the exams (e.g. language school or the British Council) immediately.

Please read the information in the invitation email carefully and follow all instructions.

It is important to know that Cambridge ESOL captures the image of candidates on the test day to further enhance security and to verify the correct identity of the candidate throughout the Cambridge ESOL testing process. This will be done by the Cambridge ESOL test day staff. Test day photos are compulsory for all candidates (except for candidates taking for Schools exams). More on Cambridge ESOL test day photography can be found here.

On the test day(s), please be punctual and bring a valid picture ID (National ID card or passport).

REFUNDS

If a candidate withdraws his/her entry on medical grounds or misses the examination due to illness, he/she may be refunded certain amount of the regular exam fee (no late entry fee is taken into consideration) provided that the Request for Refund form is completely filled-in and sent to British Council Bosnia and Herzegovina, Examinations Services, Ljubljanska 9, 71000 Sarajevo, no later than one week after the exam. The form must be accompanied by a statement from a medical practitioner.

RESULTS AND CERTIFICATES

Candidates’ answers and other work done by candidates are property of the University of Cambridge and under no circumstances will these be released to candidates, schools or centres.

All exam candidates will be provided with ID/ secret numbers together with the Confirmation of Entry which will enable them to access results online (approximately 8 – 10 weeks after the written test date). The registering institutions will be able to access their candidates’ results online at the same time, if they have received their own identification codes from the exam centre. Individual paper performance is not provided for those candidates with grade X (absent from part of the examination), grade Z (absent from all of the examination), or PENDING (result to follow).

About a month after the release of results, certificates will be sent to all candidates by post. Candidates that registered through a registering institution will receive their results through that institution.

The results are provisional and are subject to amendment by Cambridge ESOL prior to the issue of certificates.

If a candidate loses the certificate it is possible to get only a certified copy of the results at a certain fee.

Candidates' Statements of Results for most Cambridge ESOL exams now include a score out of 100 for the exam as a whole, as well as their grade and the graphical profile of performance in each paper. This gives them more precise information than has previously been available, and will help centres and schools to get a more accurate picture of the overall performance of their students. To understand better your exam score, please visit  Cambridge ESOL website.

ENQUIRY ON RESULT

If you are unhappy with your results you may apply for an Enquiry on Results procedure.

Each exam has a final date for receiving Results Enquiries, and after this date it will not be possible to request an enquiry.

For March examinations, schools and candidates need to have contacted their centre to discuss a possible enquiry by 15 June.

For May/June examinations, schools and candidates need to have contacted their centre to discuss a possible enquiry by 15 September.

For November/December examinations, schools and candidates need to have contacted their centre to discuss a possible enquiry by 15 March.

Where an enquiry leads to a change of grade, any Results Enquiry fee paid will be reimbursed.

Where candidates are dissatisfied with the outcome of the Results Enquiry process, they are entitled to request a formal appeal against their result.

You can choose to have one or more test components re-marked. The re-mark is done by trained clerical markers and Cambridge ESOL-appointed senior examiners. Please note that you will not receive any kind of feedback or comments on your work.

There is a standard fee for this which is fully refunded if your score changes.

For more information please email us.
