THE MILITARY ENGLISH SUPPORT PROJECT (MESP)

The Military English Support Project (MESP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is part of the wider Peacekeeping English Project, which has PEP managers and trainers in many countries through the world. This language training provided by the project is in preparation for military training and for the participation of BiH armed forces in multinational peacekeeping operations.

MESP delivers language training to the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our two main training centres are situated in Sarajevo and Banja Luka. We employ four full-time teachers in these centres. Our courses, at intermediate and upper-intermediate levels are each 12 weeks long and aim to prepare for future participation in the Peace Support Operations Training Centre based just outside Sarajevo. Depending on the level of the course, students receive a combination of computer-based , teacher-led and guided self study training.

The project has also set up and manages a language training centre in the Joint Staff BiH. Here students from the Ministry of Defence and Joint Staff BiH can attend non-intensive courses while still at work. The MESP trainers run courses at different levels to match the needs of the personnel who work there.

The project is currently in the process of transition. MESP has handed over responsibility for 11 Mini-centres to the BiH Armed Forces in 2007. By March 2010 ownership of the project will continue to be passed over to the BiH Ministry of Defence and Armed Force. This will involve the transfer of responsibility for running the Joint Staff Main Centre at Bistrik in the spring of 2009 and the full handover of the two remaining Main Centres in Sarajevo and Banja Luka in early 2010. This ‘graduation’ of the project means that responsibility for all teaching and teaching- related activity will be assumed by the BiH Armed Forces, with MESP restricted to a purely consultative role from that date.
