CLI participants gathered in Istanbul at the end of October to reflect and exchange on challenges and opportunities for the future of the cultural sector : its key role in society, and the way they position themselves in this ever changing environment.

André Akutsa has been selected in France to join a network of 18 countries. He has been awarded a grant of £3,000 for professional development and will bring to the network his experience, ideas and vision.

Throughout Europe and across the world, the cultural sector is growing both in complexity and importance. The sector has a unique and vital socio-economic role to play in rapidly-changing and unstable times. It is crucial that its future leaders develop ideas, skills and networks to drive the sector forward and ensure its relevance to the changing societies around it.
This is why, as part of its creative and cultural economy agenda, the British Council has developped the Cultural Leadership International programme.

The aim is to strengten the positive influence of the cultural sector globally, and develop an active, international network of next generation leaders, to tackle similar challenges, share solutions, and learn from successful models.
Through taking a cross-sectoral approach to leadership, the British Council aims to harness best practice from across different disciplines and to encourage the emergence of a new vision for the arts to tackle major social and cultural issues.
Our aim is to create ‘open space’ and to encourage the discussion of ideas that will inform policy debate in the arts as well as support individual cultural projects.
