Frequently Asked Questions
about Chevening Scholarship

What does ‘Chevening’ mean?

The word 'Chevening' is synonymous with prestigious scholarships to the UK.

'Chevening House' is the name of the official country residence of the British Foreign Secretary. In 1994 Douglas Hurd, then Foreign Secretary, renamed the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's Scholarships and Awards Scheme - 'The British Chevening Scholarships Programme', after Chevening House.

Where do I apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

The candidate completes the application form online. The applicant creates their own login and password and the system allows partial completion of an application so that applicants can return to complete the form.

When all pages of the application have been completed the applicant should submit their application.  From this point forward they will no longer be able to log in and the applicants log-in and password will be deleted.

Applicants are required to provide correct information when completing the application form and be able to provide official documents when requested. The information on the application form is considered fully confidential. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Double entry applications will not be considered for the award.

Any application form, sent to the British Council by e-mail or other means will not be considered for the awards.

What are the financial arrangements?
In BiH Type B scholarships  are offered. These are full scholarships which cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances as well as international travel to and from UK.
What are the selection criteria for application?

Competition for Chevening scholarships is intense, and only one in every 25 applicants is successful. A typical successful applicant would:

Be a Bosnia and Herzegovina citizen residing in BiH with a first degree at the time of applying
Have two years of relevant work experience
Committed to return to BiH and contribute to its socio-economic development through implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.
Established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field.
Be able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship and use it to succeed in their chosen career.
Have a clear idea how their scholarship will benefit their country on their return.
Have excellent written and spoken English. Most UK Higher Education Institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto postgraduate courses.

There is no age limit.
What types of courses can I study on a Chevening scholarship?

In BiH scholarships are offered for one year postgraduate study only. Scholars must already have a first degree in order to study for postgraduate degrees particularly.

We don’t fund undergraduate courses and don’t consider PhD's and MPhil's of more than a year duration.

Chevening scholarships can be used to study most subjects, however in different countries they may target a narrower range of subjects that are especially relevant to the country. Priority areas for BiH are: law, economics, media studies, international relations, EU integrations, environmental studies, but high academic achievers in other subjects will also be considered, along with good candidates for newer universities offering non-traditional subjects.

Can I study outside the United Kingdom?
No. Chevening scholarships are only awarded for study within the United Kingdom. Sometimes courses include short study visits outside of the United Kingdom and these are permissible.
Do I need to have preliminary contacts with a university in the UK?

It is expected that applicants know what course of study they would like to pursue. The best way to get informed is through the website Education UK , the most extensive database of all universities in UK and selection of studies (courses) that they offer.

Can I bring my family to the United Kingdom during my scholarship?
We strongly advise that you do not bring any family members to the United Kingdom during the period of your scholarship. Most of your time will be spent studying for your qualification. The period of study is very intense and it is important that you are able to give it your full attention. Chevening scholarships are designed for single people and there are no additional allowances for partners, spouses, children or other dependants. Our stipends, which are offered at standard UK rates, are designed to allow you to live a comparable lifestyle to a single UK Postgraduate scholar (e.g. you should not expect to be able to run a vehicle etc.).
Can I work permanently in the United Kingdom once my scholarship is finished?
No. Although many scholars do take a short break or choose to attend their graduation ceremony before returning home, it is envisaged that Chevening scholars will return home and contribute to the development of their country by implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK. Chevening scholars agree when accepting their scholarship to return home at the scholarship conclusion.
How easy is it to obtain a ‘Visa’ for my period of study in the United Kingdom?
The Prime Minister has announced a more 'open-door' policy for international students. This initiative includes an improved service to help scholars meet immigration requirements, a streamlined visa process for scholars with completed applications and permission to stay granted for the whole course of study at the start.
Do I need IELTS test certificate (or any other official certificate)?
No. You do not need an official certificate to prove your English competence. All applicants who pass paper selection and interviews successfully will be asked to sit IELTS at British Council, at our expense.
WHAT DOCUMENTS SHOULD I PROVIDE FOR THE INTERVIEW?

If you are invited for the interview you will be informed what additional documents you should have with you. You may be asked to provide following:

Two references - one academic and one from your employer, signed by the referee and in English.
Copy of the undergraduate diploma .
Copy of the record (transcript) of passed exams (photocopy of the index is not acceptable).

There is no need for an official and legalised translation of certificates at the first stage. We shall ask you for that later on, if you are successful.

Please note that the documents requested in the application form will not be returned to you.

Translation of academic certificates?
No need of an official and legalised translation of certificates at the first stage. We shall ask you for that later on, if you are successful.
WHAT 'CHEV/2 FORM' AND 'MED 100 FORM' ARE?
Forms that have to be filled-in later on if you are successful. Not relevant at all at the first stage of the application and reference for them is included in the part 'For official use only' of the application.
