Peacekeeping English Project

We manage a programme of Peacekeeping English Projects (PEP) on behalf of the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Ministry of Defence.

The long term aim of this project is to promote the development of a sustainable system for English Language Training for the armed forces in Azerbaijan. This is to enable better regional communication, as preparation for other training, and to enable a greater contribution to regional and multinational Peace Support Operations, security operations and humanitarian and disaster relief activities.

This project is of great interest to the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defence due to closer co-operation with NATO and participation in Peacekeeping operations in Afganistan and Iraq.

The main activity at the moment is the direct teaching of Azeri officers by a newly recruited staff of three Azeri English language teachers who are also involved in a range of mini projects such as test development, materials and programme design and the production of an Azeri English glossary of military terms.

There are similar projects in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia and joint activities and training courses have taken the local PEP staff to a number of different countries including Germany, Slovenia, Estonia, The Czech Republic, Croatia and of course the UK.
