Do I need a work permit or visa to work in the UK?
As an Austrian and therefore a citizen of the EU, you don't need a work permit nor a visa to work in the UK. A valid passport is sufficient. The website of the British Embassy in Vienna provides a great deal of information on this subject.
I would like to live and work in the UK. Where can I get information about what I need to do?

How do I find out about taxes in the UK?

If you live and work in the UK for six months or longer within a tax year period, you are required to pay tax. If you are already living in the UK, your nearest Inland Revenue Office can help you. The Inland Revenue's website is also a good source of information.

I am unemployed and would like to look for work in the UK. Am I entitled to unemployment pay there?
The Department for Work and Pensions publishes a very informative brochure on this topic entitled 'Your social security insurance, benefits and healthcare rights in the European Economic Area.' You can access it from their website.
If I go to the UK, am I covered by health insurance?

Yes, you are. If you are a citizen of the European Union or European Economic Area and you are working or looking for work in Britain, you are entitled to free medical treatment provided by the National Health Service (NHS). The British Embassy in Vienna produces an informative document about what you need to know if you plan on living and working in the UK for longer than six months.

How do I find a job in the UK?

There are several ways of looking for a job in the UK. One possibility is to contact your Austrian job centre (Arbeitsamt). The Arbeitsamt has a database of international jobs, including those in the UK. Most British cities also have jobcentres you can contact for employment and career services. The Jobcentre Plus website includes the contact details of all the jobcentres in the UK, a job bank as well as a wealth of advice about finding a job.

I would like to work as an Austrian language assistant in the UK. Where can I get more information?

The option of working as a Foreign Language Assistant in the UK is now open to all students with sufficient knowledge of English - and not only to 'Anglistik' students, as it was previously. Foreign Language Assistants are paid to assist teachers for approximately 12-15 hours per week, usually for a school year of nine months. The majority of placements are at secondary schools.
