The IELTS test (which stands for International English Language Testing System) is an internationally recognised language test of the highest quality. Universities, companies and even governments primarily demand this qualification. IELTS was developed jointly by the British Council, IDP Education Australia and Cambridge ESOL. How can I register for the IELTS test?

You can download the application form from the page How to register .

You should register at least two weeks before the exam. Registrations received after this deadline are subject to an additional late fee of € 50.

How can I prepare for the test?
Attend one of our IELTS preparation workshops.  Or why not buy the Official IELTS Practice Materials pack for €30,- which you can order online.
What is the format of the test?

The test comprises four parts:

Listening – 30 minutes
Reading – 1 hour
Writing – 1 hour
Speaking – 13 – 15 minutes

The Listening and Speaking parts of the test are the same for all candidates. The Reading and Writing parts can be taken in one of two modules: either Academic or General Training. Please note that your speaking test may be on a separate day (normally one or two days before or after the written test).

How long is the IELTS qualification valid?
This depends on the receiving institution. Two years’ validity is recommended.
How often can I repeat the test?
You can repeat the test as often as you like.
What result do I need to achieve to pass the test?

If you are taking the test as an entrance requirement for a university degree course you should contact the university at which you are applying to study. Universities have varying requirements.

If you are taking the test in order to emigrate to Australia, Canada or New Zealand, you should contact the Embassy concerned.

Should I take the Academic or General Training Module?

The Academic module is primarily taken by those sitting the test for study purposes. More information can be found under ‘Recognition’ on the IELTS website.

The General Training module is designed for those who need to prove their general English language ability.

Please contact the institution which requires you to take the IELTS test to check which module you need to take.

How quickly do I receive the results?

It is now possible to find out your IELTS results online. Your results will be available online from 6pm on the 13th day after your written test date. Simply log on to the IELTS Online Results website and follow the instructions.

Your IELTS Test Report Form will also be sent to you by post on the same day.

It is not possible to give results by telephone.

What do I need to bring with me to the test?
You need to bring your passport or national identity card to all parts of the test.
Can I take the test if English is my first language?
Yes.
Is it possible to sit the computerised test in Austria?
No, in Austria you can only sit the 'pen and Paper' version of IELTS.
Which centre details do I need to fill in on the test application form (question 19)?
You only need to complete this if you have taken the IELTS test before, in which case you must enter your most recent test details - these are given on your Test Report Form.
What happens if I want to postpone or cancel my application?
If you request a postponement or cancellation of your test less than 5 weeks before the test date you will normally be charged the full test fee, unless your request is for medical reasons and you are able to provide appropriate medical evidence to support your request. Your medical certificate must be received no later than 5 days after the test date. Then the test fee is refunded minus a local administrative charge of € 50,-.
