Quick answers to frequently asked questions
Are you interested in sitting a Cambridge ESOL exam and have some queries? Look at our list of frequently asked questions. For further queries please contact our exams team.
Do I have to attend a preparation course?
No. We recommend, however, that candidates prepare well for an exam. Many language schools offer special preparation courses for the Cambridge examinations.
Can I use a dictionary in the exam?
No, neither a dictionary nor any other materials may be used in the examination. Everything that you need will be provided for you on the day of the exam.
What grade do I need in order to receive a certificate?
In the case of FCE, CAE, CPE, BEC Vantage and BEC Higher, candidates who achieve the grades A, B or C, and in the case of BEC Preliminary and KET and PET candidates with Pass with Merit and Pass, all receive a certificate.
When do I receive the results?
Results are available online to all candidates six to eight weeks after the exam at https://cambridgeesol-results.org. More information will be handed out to the candidates on the day of their written exam.
Can I cancel or transfer my registration?
Registrations cannot be transferred! In accordance with the Cambridge ESOL Regulations, registrations cannot be transferred either to another examination date or to another Cambridge ESOL examination level. If you have to cancel a registration, please note that Cambridge ESOL only offers a refund of the examination fee – minus an administrative fee of €65 – for medical reasons or in cases of military service. For further information please see our terms and conditions.
Can arrangements be made for candidates with special needs?
Cambridge ESOL endeavours to provide candidates with special needs, such as hearing or visual difficulties or physical handicaps, with equal opportunities to sit Cambridge language examinations. Special arrangements include for example question papers in braille or with enlarged print or special recordings for candidates with hearing difficulties. Please note that the deadline for special arrangement requests is the enrolment deadline for the examination in question. For further details please contact exams@britishcouncil.at.
How long is my certificate valid?
The language certificates are widely known and recognised internationally. There no fixed time limitation in validity, but in individual cases this will depend on the receiving institution.
Can I access my examination papers and check my mistakes?
No, since all examination papers are sent to Cambridge ESOL in the UK. The answer sheets and other materials which you filled out as part of the exam remain the property of Cambridge ESOL and cannot be passed on either to candidates, schools or examination centres.
