Project management training

The British Council will be holding a 5-day conference in Indonesia from 24 August – 29 August 2008 Developing Climate Solutions: project management for emerging leaders. Building on the Asian Emerging Leaders Climate Forum (AELCF) held in Bogor in December 2007, the event will bring together people from across East Asia to take part in a series of presentations, workshops and cultural activities culminating in the presentation of project proposals to the Asian Emerging Leaders Climate Forum advisory board.

The focus of the event will be on capacity building for emerging leaders currently engaged in climate awareness and mitigation actions that impact positively both on their environments and their communities. The key objectives for participants are:

  • To undergo capacity building in project management
  • To develop individual project proposals which are then submitted to the scrutiny of experts
  • To learn how to develop successful bids
  • To share experiences and views of the climate issues facing the region

British Council Australia will send two delegates to attend this event with all expenses paid. Additionally, each delegate will be awarded a conditional Project Grant of $20,000 to deliver a successful project in partnership with the British Council on their return, provided they can match these funds by raising additional industry support. The successful delegates will be able to demonstrate that they have the leadership credentials and ideas to meet this challenge.

The award

The Emerging Leaders Awards are intended to benefit outstanding emerging practitioners working in relevant fields who have proven their potential to initiate change and contribute to outcomes in the area of climate change. We are looking for emerging leaders who will successfully implement their plans, motivate others to join them and really make a difference. Preference will be given to: politicians; business leaders; journalists; officials linked to climate change policy implementation; lawyers; teachers; those engaged with community groups; other professionals; and student leaders. Successful applicants should have a track record in leadership and climate related activities.

Candidates will be assessed on achievements to date both in and outside of the academic and workplace areas; referees' letters; merit of the proposed project concept; leadership credentials and potential to further strengthen the UK-Australia-East Asia multilateral relationship.

The award includes:

  • A $20,000 award to implement the proposed project upon return to Australia in partnership with the British Council. This award is conditional on the candidate securing matched funding from other sources. See below for further details.
  • 5-day project management training course to develop project concepts
  • A return economy airfare to Indonesia from any Australian city
