Landerer UK Arts Scholarship
Applications close Friday 29 June 2007

What is the Landerer UK Arts Scholarship?

The objective of the Landerer UK Arts Scholarship 2007 is to strengthen the relationship between the UK and Australia by supporting an outstanding postgraduate student in the arts and creative industries to study in the UK. The Scholarship is an award of $30,000 to contribute to the costs of tuition fees and stipend for a Masters course in the arts and design lasting up to 12 months' duration at any UK institution. One scholarship will be awarded in 2007. The scholarship is managed on behalf of the Landerer family by the British Council in Australia. John Landerer is a Sydney solicitor who wishes to support closer ties between Australia and the UK.

To apply for the scholarship you need to complete the application and medical forms below and forward them to the British Council with supporting documentation, namely two references and evidence of acceptance or a positive response from a UK university.

Nationality and age limit

The Scholarship is open to any Australian citizen aged 30 or younger on 1 October 2007.

Selection process

All applicants will receive notification of whether or not they will be called for interview at the offices of the British Council in Sydney on Tuesday 10 July 2007. The interviews will take place on Thursday 19 July 2007. The British Council will cover any reasonable airfare costs to travel to Sydney for interview purposes. Candidates will be assessed on academic merit; achievements to date both in and outside the academic and workplace areas; referees' letters; proposed area of study and future career; leadership potential and potential to further strengthen relationships and understanding between the UK and Australia.

What does the scholarship cover?

The scholarship is a contribution towards the cost of tuition fees and living expenses in the UK. The $30,000 will be paid as follows:

  • Either in a lump sum directly to the UK institution for payment of fees
  • Or directly into the awardee’s UK bank account as four equal payments consisting of one payment of $7,500 on confirmation that the student has commenced study in the UK followed by three payments of $7,500 at intervals of three months

In exceptional circumstances the British Council and John Landerer reserve the right to review these arrangements in ways which will not prejudice the awardee’s ability to pursue his or her studies successfully. Under no circumstances will the scholarship be extended beyond one year. No additional payments (for example for flights or visas) will be made as part of this scholarship.

What type of courses can I undertake?

In 2007, postgraduate studies in the UK in the following areas are eligible for the scholarship:

  • Architecture
  • Design [Product, Automotive, Graphic, Fashion, Industrial]
  • Fine art [Sculpture, Painting, Printmaking]
  • Performing arts [Drama, Dance, Music, including all aspects of performance, composition, writing, design, production and direction]
