We are pleased to announce the 2009 Landerer UK Arts Scholarship recipient is Christopher May, who has been accepted to study a Masters in Musicology at Oxford University.
Twenty four year old Christopher has a Bachelor of Arts (Music) from the University of Sydney where he received Honours Class 1 and the University Medal. He’ll soon also complete a Bachelor of Laws at Sydney University, but his passion is musicology, singing, conducting, composing and arranging. We are glad that the Scholarship can support him in choosing this path.
The objective of the Landerer UK Arts Scholarship is to strengthen the relationship between the UK and Australia by supporting an outstanding postgraduate student in the arts and creative industries to study in the UK.
The Scholarship is an award of $30,000 to contribute towards either (1) the fees for a Masters course in the arts and design lasting up to 12 months’ duration at any UK institution OR (2) living expenses, books and materials.
The scholarship is to be paid directly to the institution which the scholar is attending as a contribution to fees or, on receipt of evidence that these fees have been already paid, as a cash stipend in a series of payments.
The scholarship is managed on behalf of the Landerer family by the British Council in Australia. John Landerer is a Sydney solicitor who wishes to support closer ties between Australia and the UK.
What is covered
The scholarship is a contribution towards the cost of tuition fees and living expenses in the UK. The successful applicant can choose to have the $30,000 award direct as:
•A lump sum directly to the UK institution for payment of fees or;
•Upon receipt of evidence that the fees have already been paid, directly into the awardee’s UK bank account as four equal payments consisting of one payment of $7,500 on confirmation that the student has commenced study in the UK followed by three payments of $7,500 at intervals of three months.
In exceptional circumstances the British Council and John Landerer reserve the right to review these arrangements in ways which will not prejudice the awardee’s ability to pursue his or her studies successfully. Under no circumstances will the scholarship be extended beyond one year. No additional payments (for example for flights or visas) will be made as part of this scholarship.
The Scholarship is open to any Australian citizen aged 30 or younger on 1 October 2009.
In 2009, postgraduate studies in the UK in the following areas are eligible for the scholarship:

Payment of the award itself is conditional on the awardee having been accepted by the agreed institution (for direct payment of fees to the institution) or having commenced studies in the UK (for payment of living expenses in four instalments).
