Does my project need to address an urban context?
Yes, the focus of these grants is on finding innovative solutions to climate change in urban settings.
Can my project relate to any area of climate change adaptation and mitigation?
Big Green Idea grants will be awarded to projects that address one or more of the following broad areas:
•waste reduction and efficiency
•transport and travel
•energy
•water efficiency
•sustainable design
Your project will need to focus specifically on a particular issue related to the categories above. However, please note that our aim is not necessarily to award a grant to each area of activity; the distribution of projects will be based on merit.
If I am successful in my grant application and become a British Council International Climate Champion, what will this involve?
Awardees are encouraged to participate in the British Council’s online climate forums and be prepared to undertake professional development, advocacy and networking activities up to 31 March 2011.
Information on specific opportunities will be made available throughout the year.
For more information on International Climate Champions, visit our website:
Can groups and organisations apply?
Only applications from individuals are eligible. However, projects may be affiliated with and delivered through groups and organisations. An organisation may also officially auspice a grant on behalf of an individual.
How do I determine if I am considered ‘emerging’ within my field?
For the purpose of this programme, you are considered ‘emerging’ if you are within the first ten years of applied professional practice within your current field. Applied professional practice does not include study. Applicants must be aged 18 or over; there is no age limit.
Do I need to already be active within the field of climate change or sustainability?
No. Applicants can be from any professional sector and must be able to demonstrate skills in project management and leadership potential. Expertise and/or previous engagement in the area of climate mitigation will be viewed favourably, but is not essential.
Is the $10,000 grant inclusive or exclusive of GST?
If you are GST-registered when you receive a Big Green Idea grant, the British Council will pay the grant amount plus GST (where required). The budget given in your application should be exclusive of GST. If you are not GST registered, your budget should include GST as this is part of the cost of the project.
When will I find out if I’m successful?
All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by Friday 18 December 2009.
