British Council Arts
UK arts funding infrastructure

This page lists some key infrastructure supporting arts organisations in the UK, and their aims. There are many other smaller funding and support bodies; this is just a small selection to get started with.

British Council Arts Group does not organise or support events in the United Kingdom, except for a couple of showcases aimed at overseas promoters, and Connecting  Futures initiatives.

Arts Council England

Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts in England distributing public money from Government and the National Lottery.  Their site includes a funding section.

The site also includes contact information by region.

Arts Council of Wales

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) is responsible for funding and developing the arts in Wales. ACW is the distributor of Lottery money for the arts in Wales. National Lottery funds are allocated to ACW by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), based in London.

ACW works with many partners in carrying out its national responsibility for developing and funding the arts in Wales and advising the Welsh Assembly Government on issues associated with the arts.

Scottish Arts Council

The Scottish Arts Council is one of the main channels for Government funding for the arts in Scotland. They also distribute National Lottery funds received from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The Scottish Arts Council support galleries, festivals, theatres, arts centres, touring companies, contemporary dance, promoters, service organisations and artist resource centres. They also provide awards, bursaries, fellowships, travel and research grants to a wide range of artists, including visual artists, craftmakers, writers, musicians, playwrights, dancers and arts administrators.

In addition to thier funding role, the Scottish Arts Council provides valuable information services to the arts community and conduct research.

Arts Council of Northern Ireland

The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is the prime distributor of public support for the arts. The Council does not devolve responsibility down to committees, but consults panels of external advisers before making decisions regarding grants, awards, scholarships and bursaries.
