Work Permits and Tax If you come as an artist under cultural exchange and receive no income while you are in the country, then you do not need to apply for work permit or apply any tax.
But if you come to work for commercial purposes then you need to apply for a business visa and work permit and you will be subject to taxation. Before departure you need to apply for a business visa from the Thai Embassy, and on arrival in Thailand you have to report and fill a form at the tax office which will require 2 passport-size photographs. The host organiser should prepare all the document and formalities for you. Normally, the organiser will hire an expert to deal with this for them.
Freight If you have to bring your own instruments or props, and they are not too heavy, it is recommended that you bring them as excess luggage to avoid customs formalities. If you have a lot of things and need them to be sent by freight, please spare time for customs clearance, as this can take at least 3 days and again you need somebody to handle this for you which means you have to pay for the handling charge, storage charge etc. Sometimes this will cost you more than excess luggage charge.
Carnets If you have carnets it will take 3 days to clear freight at customs. If you do not have carnets you need at a least 5 working days for customs clearing and it requires a bond for importing goods.
