British Council Nigeria
Visas British passport holders need a visa to enter Nigeria. This is easy to obtain but do allow at least 1-3 weeks for it to be issued. If you are a visiting artist you can state "OFFICIAL BUSINESS" as the reason for your visit on visa applications. Your hosts in Nigeria will write letters to the Nigerian High Commission in London and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja requesting that a visa be issued. Before leaving the UK double-check that you have the following
- a valid passport which will remain current during your stay in Nigeria
- an entry visa for the period of your visit stamped in your passport
- a return ticket from Nigeria
- an up-to-date yellow fever vaccination certificate. (This is compulsory for Nigeria and must be at east 10 days old though in practice one is rarely asked to show it)
- a description of your baggage which can be given to the airline's officials should your luggage be mislaid
- sufficient foreign exchange cash: travellers cheques and credit cards should be left at home.
- Letter of invitation to facilitate or participate in an event stating you passport details e.g. Passport Number, Date of issue, Date of expiry, Full name, DOB, Place of Birth, Occupation, Address (permanent) and the duration of your visit.
Entry clearance For this you will need photocopies of documents presented at the NHC (Nigerian high commission) and your flight details.
Tax This is covered in the price of your air ticket.
Forms When you check in make sure you get a departure card. For the visa form, see above.
Work permits Work permits are necessary (unless the event is British Council sponsored). For details contact your partner organisation in Nigeria.
