Visas There are two aspects to the visa. There are people from certain countries like Nigeria, Brazil, Turkey and a few others who are supposed to obtain entry clearance prior to leaving their respective countries. People coming from the UK do not need to obtain special clearance prior to leaving the UK. They are given a visa valid for three months at the point of entry (the airport in this case). This visa is free of charge. Should they need to stay for more than three months, then they can apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) from the Immigration Department which will be valid for 6 months and this costs MK6,000 which is about £43. In the event when the TRP expires, then they can still buy another one at the same fee of £43 valid for another 6 months.
Work permits Artists visiting Malawi for short-term stay (not more than three months) will not need a work permit. If you are staying for more than three months you will need to apply to the Immigration Department for a Temporary Employment Permit (TEP) which is valid for three years. The cost for a TEP is MK60,000 which is about £429. There are some organisations which are exempt from paying this money but the criteria for determining which organisation is exempt is unclear.
Entry clearance Entry clearance is not required for people coming into Malawi from the UK. This means that UK nationals can just fly into Malawi and get their entry documents processed at the airport.
Freight There is a limit in terms of how much baggage one can have entering or leaving Malawi. People travelling Economy class are allowed 20kg maximum as free baggage while those travelling Business class can get 30kg of baggage. Those whose luggage exceed the stipulated limits above are required to pay US$33 for every additional kilogram of luggage.
Insurance The cost of insurance for overseas travellers is built into the cost of the airfare itself. This is done in a bid to ensure that every traveller is insured before they depart their country of origin
Forms Every person flying into Malawi is required to fill in an entry form which is usually given to travellers on the plane, or available from the airport. This form requires travellers to fill in their personal particulars such as name, surname, residential address in country of origin, address of where they are going, passport number, where and when passport was obtained, when the passport will be expiring and duration of stay in Malawi. The form is basic and is then handed over to immigration officials for processing your entry into Malawi. |
