ARTISTIC POLICY Shobana Jeyasingh’s company tours nationally and internationally, producing works of quality and integrity, which are challenging and accessible. These have high production values and typically involve a wide range of contemporary collaborators for design, music, film, and the theatrical use of new technologies. Dance works draw on a newly forged dance language that communicates the choreographer’s artistic concerns, which in turn are rooted in the British Asian experience.
REVIEW EXTRACTS 'Jeyasingh launches her company like an army of warriors, confronting the future of dance, they brandish a dazzling armoury of steps and gesture – fast, articulate and daring.' The Guardian
'The dance has a sleek, sharp, daring and hustling snap.' The Times
'Jeyasingh's dances always look appealing – her stage is like an art gallery, the objects and people within it are lushly lit.' The Daily Telegraph
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS Flicker Specially commissioned digital visuals and music by iconic British composer Michael Nyman. Exploring Jeyasingh’s and Nyman’s shared interest in shapes and random patterning, the music and choreography collide, clash and melt together in alternating rhythms and dynamic, unstoppable motion. This piece can be performed with live electric guitar (30 mins, 10–11 on the road)
Exit No Exit A work about the anticipation of entrances and the impossibility of easy exits, building on Jeyasingh’s intriguing collaboration with Michael Nyman. His newly arranged score for bass clarinet and string quartet, together with digital filmmaker Nichola Bruce’s and lighting designer Lucy Carter’s evocatively lit projections, create a visual and aural masterpiece. This piece can be performed with live bass clarinet. (10–11 on the road)
FUTURE PRODUCTIONS New Work (title tbc) Shobana Jeyasingh is working with filmmaker Pete Gomes, projection consultant Dick Straker, sound artist Scanner and soprano Patricia Rosario, to create a piece that explores contemporary British Asian tensions. Includes filmed element with Patricia Rosario, design by long-term collaborators Lucy Carter (lighting) and Ursula Bombshell (costume), and a company of eight diverse dancers. Can be performed with a live opera singer. Available for touring from February 2007. (11–12 on the road)
