ARTISTIC POLICY Since 1998, Rotozaza has produced an innovative, humorous and risk-taking theatre. Recently, this has involved selected performers, different every night and often non-professional, who simply agree to follow instructions, live and unrehearsed – a practice which has produced links with artists and venues all over the world. Via strategies such as this, the work carefully confuses reality and fiction, celebrating theatre by identifying 'what can only be done live'. Rotozaza's work is production-light, inexpensive to travel and can often be performed in the language of the host country.
REVIEW EXTRACTS 'There is no doubting the talent or ambition of a company who can so intriguingly prod at our unconscious.' The Guardian (Five in the Morning)
'Superb... A triumph of technological and conceptual prowess, in the guise of bare-bones avant-gardism.' Irish Times (Doublethink)
'The delicacy with which a narrative is conveyed through subtle prompting and emotional revelation is simply breathtaking.' New Statesman (Doublethink)
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS Five In The Morning [v2] Three willing (but fake) 'guest performers' take instructions from the loudspeakers of Aquaworld, an enormous indoor swimming pool complex. At first hilarious and fun, their predicament transforms slowly into a strange and powerful reality. Rotozaza's 'minimal masterpiece' explores the thin line between theatrical illusion and deceit. (60 mins, 4 on the road)
Doublethink Mixes unrehearsed 'guests' with prepared elements (rehearsed actors/fictional characters) to create an epic and chaotic picture of inner dialogue and self-deception. (80 mins, 3 on the road)
Ooff Fast, comic, choreographed and cartoon-like, starring sport-obsessed 'Mini Lavette' as a girl caught in dreamlike loops of insecurity, physical ineptitude and confusion. (55 mins, 2–3 on the road)
Romcom, or the Distance Love Can be Maintained Between Any Two Fixed Points Text by Glen Neath. An 'automatic romantic comedy' for two unrehearsed actors who wear headphones telling them what to say and do. (55 mins, 2 on the road)
WRAP-AROUND ACTIVITY Workshops, post-show discussions, talks and seminars by arrangement.
