ARTISTIC POLICY Out of Joint is a national and international theatre company dedicated to the production of new writing, with the occasional revival or classic. It was founded in 1993 by Max Stafford-Clark. Under his direction the company has premiered plays by leading writers including Sebastian Barry, Caryl Churchill, David Hare, Mark Ravenhill and Timberlake Wertenbaker, as well as first-time writers such as Stella Feehily.
REVIEW EXTRACTS 'Outstanding. Not only the best new play I’ve seen this year, but also one of the most entertaining. A superb production.' The Daily Telegraph (The Overwhelming)
'This funny and painfully perceptive play is acted to the hilt in Max Stafford-Clark's bracingly fluid production.' Sunday Express (O Go My Man)
'You expect something special from the touring company Out of Joint, and this electrifying Macbeth does not disappoint. The director Max Stafford-Clark has brilliantly reimagined Shakespeare's Scottish tale of murder and magic in modern Africa... a visceral and intelligent evocation of the stuff of ancient and modern nightmares, it works like a dream.' The Times
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS Macbeth Inspired by African conflicts, a site-specific promenade production which has transformed old factories, a stately home and other unexpected locations. (135 mins, 11 on stage plus 4 local child actors for each venue, 20 on the road, contains violence and brief nudity)
Sisters, Such Devoted Sisters Russell Barr’s funny and moving monologue has been a hit in London, New York and elsewhere internationally. Drag queen Bernice Hindley tells a humorous, shocking yet compassionate story about the lives of a group of drag queens in Glasgow's surreal underworld. It’s also a touching and unusual coming-of-age story. Fact or fiction? You decide. (55 mins, 1 on stage, 2 on the road, contains references to violence and sex)
The Overwhelming Produced by the National Theatre in association with Out of Joint, JT Rogers’ play sees an American academic move to Rwanda with his wife and teenage son during the build-up to the genocide. Jack’s search for a missing doctor leads him – and his family – into danger. An atmospheric, Graham Greene-esque thriller. (150 mins including 20 minute interval, 19 on the road, 11 on stage)
FUTURE PRODUCTIONS King of Hearts By Alistair Beaton. Satire about love, politics and the Royal Family, from the team behind the West End hit Feelgood. From early 2007.
