PERMANENT STAFF Artist Mem Morrison
Project Manager Cheryl Pierce (Artsadmin)
ARTISTIC POLICY Mem Morrison is a performance artist who has been making his own, highly personal, work since 1995. He is interested in exploring performance as a healing process and as a way of finding a voice. With a strong emphasis on design and colour, the work often draws upon personal history and environment to evoke the complexities of acknowledging and accepting cultural differences.
REVIEW EXTRACTS 'Mem Morrison radiates talent as a writer and performer… witty and intriguing. Proof that live theatre is still alive.' Independent on Sunday
'Prepare to be charmed.' Evening Standard
'If the words performance, alternative or visual arts have previously left you leaping for the nearest taxi, prepare to leap the other way.' Attitude Magazine
CURRENT PRODUCTION Leftovers The full English breakfast is given a citizenship test as Mem Morrison returns to his roots to explore the cultural connotations of the traditional greasy spoon café. Leftovers takes Mem’s culinary and cultural concerns out onto the high street to uncover an English café culture that has been assimilated and imperceptibly changed by generations of Turkish Cypriot families. Leftovers will explore culture and cultural difference and how this is expressed through food. It is a gentle exploration of how cultures meet and mingle, eat, socialise and influence each other.
FUTURE PRODUCTION Ringside Inspired by a childhood fixation with wedding ceremonies, Ringside is based on home video footage of family weddings attended by Morrison over the last 30 years. The weddings are showy and lavish, rich with culture and tradition, the journey imbued with the ambiguity of growing up a second generation British Turkish Cypriot and gay man. A multi-lingual performance installation for five performer/musicians. (70 mins, 7 on the road)
WRAP-AROUND ACTIVITY Workshops, talks and residencies particularly for young people aged 15–25 years.
