ARTISTIC POLICY Lifeblood Theatre Company was established with the long-term objective of developing and producing exciting and innovative text-based theatre. The company is passionate in its belief that language is ‘the lifeblood’ of theatre, and is committed to high quality work that places text firmly at the centre. This text-based approach facilitates the development of a distinctive style that reinforces and clarifies the delivery of poetic, rhythmic writing, from which is created compelling and accessible theatre.
REVIEW EXTRACTS 'A thrilling affirmation… when a searing imagination seizes a drama and it arrives in the hands of practitioners who interpret with uncompromising vigour.' The Scotsman (The Lifeblood)
'If your interest is drama and you only have time for one production, this must be it.' British Theatre Guide (The Lifeblood)
CURRENT PRODUCTION The Lifeblood By Glyn Maxwell. With Razor sharp wit, Maxwell articulates the final months of Mary Queen of Scots, plausibly the first political prisoner, into a taut and beguiling thriller. The play is uncompromisingly modern and constantly alludes to modern day political posturing, racial/religious intolerance and asylum. (85 mins, 7 on the road)
FUTURE PRODUCTION Liberty By Glyn Maxwell. A new modern verse play inspired by Anatole France’s novel, The God’s Will have Blood. A contemporary take on the French Revolution, it shows how fanatacism, intense idealism and unbridled single mindedness led inexorably to disaster. It is a story for today. (90 mins, 10 on the road)
WRAP-AROUND ACTIVITY A variety of workshops (depending on age and experience of participants), examining speaking verse and putting verse into action on stage, as well as exploring the thematic and historical elements of the plays with their contemporary allusions. Post-show Q&A sessions with the cast, and where possible, the director and writer.
TOURING AVAILABILITY The Lifeblood from January 2007. Liberty from November 2008.
