ARTISTIC POLICY
Kazuko Hohki was born in Tokyo and came to England in 1978. She is an artist, singer, musician, animator, director, performer and storyteller who describes herself as a live artist because she adopts a multi-artform approach to making her solo theatre shows. Before making her acclaimed solo work, Kazuko founded the Japanese female pop performance group Frank Chickens, which had an independent chart hit with We Are Ninja and has released five albums and toured worldwide. Alongside her theatre work, Kazuko has created work for TV and radio and published a number of books in Japan about her life in London.

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
Toothless Directed By Tim Hope. Specially revised in 2006. Toothless is a comic elegy to Kazuko’s mother Yukiko, who was a popular priestess/entertainer in modern Japan. Using video, animation, live music and song Kazuko presents a witty and poignant examination of a relationship with a mother, country, life and death. (70 mins, 2 on stage, 3–4 on the road)

My Husband is a Spaceman Directed by Arlette George, the deceptively simple love story of a Japanese office girl and an English anthropologist. Explores a cross-cultural relationship, using music, songs, puppetry, film and animation. Inspired by the Japanese post-war Kamishibaiya (paper drama man) who traveled from town to town telling stories in the fields, using sequences of hand-painted cardboard story sheets. (65 mins, 2 on stage, 3 on the road.)

Evidence For The Existence Of Borrowers A collaboration between Kazuko Hohki, Andy Cox (The Beat, Fine Young Cannibals), Mervin Miller (Wireframe) and developed with Tom Morris (Royal National Theatre). Inspired by Mary Norton’s children’s story The Borrowers, Evidence for the Existence of Borrowers is an interactive performance and installation event that reveals the unique world and culture of the small people who live under the floorboards. (60 mins approx., 3 on stage, 4–5 on the road)
