ARTISTIC POLICY Station House Opera is an internationally renowned performance company with a unique physical and visual style. Over the past 30 years the company has produced a distinctive body of pioneering work, from its monumental sculptural performances, such as The Bastille Dances, to the award winning Roadmetal, Sweetbread. Described as ‘visionary as it is stunningly visual’, Station House Opera works outside boundaries and artform boxes, from large-scale site-specific performances, to interactive installation, and touring performance work.
REVIEW EXTRACTS A bewitching piece of theatre…one thing is certain, you’ve spent an evening in the presence of a rich and distinctive talent. Time Out (Mare’s Nest)
Roadmetal is a brilliant, unnerving, alternative reality, altogether too close for comfort. Daily Telegraph (Roadmetal Sweetbread)
Like watching constantly colliding parallel worlds…a genuinely unique theatrical event. Metro (Play on Eart)
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS Mind Out A small-scale performance with accompanying workshops. Laced with cruel humour, and exploring the separating of mind from body and character from performer, Mind Out continues Station House Opera’s fascination with shifting and complex ideas of identity in performance. (75 mins approx, 5 on stage, 6 on the road, contains some strong language) Roadmetal, Sweetbread An award winning production, recreated specifically for each venue. Projected life-size, the performers’ video images compete with their live counterparts for attention and authenticity. Multiple versions of the same characters regard each other with conflicting emotions. (75 mins, 2 on stage, 4 on the road, contains some nudity – 7 day get-in for filming, editing and rehearsing in each space) Dominoes A large-scale site specific performance using thousands of breeze blocks to be created in London in July 2009, one of the company’s large scale sculptural projects, created to commission.
FUTURE PRODUCTIONS The Haunting a site-specific foyer project, created for public spaces of arts buildings. Pre-recorded and interactive live film projected in public areas, involving both audiences and performers, revealing parallel spaces, ‘ghost’ audiences and unlikely narrative. Created specifically for each venue. 4 performers, 6 on the road. The Block a high-density performance for large open venues. A 10 metre square, six-storey structure is seen in the round as a performance area for 200 performers, professionals and (local) amateurs. Inspired by the Kowloon Walled City, once the most densely populated place on earth. 15 people on tour, performance and vocal workshops undertaken locally, with 190 local performers.
WRAP-AROUND Post-show talks and Q&A sessions for general audiences. Talks and workshops (from half day to week long) for artists, performers and performing/visual arts students. Lose Your Mind workshops touring with Mind Out. Performing and vocal workshops leading to performances of The Block.
