FUTURE PRODUCTIONS Running the Silk Road by Paul Sirett The story: As the world’s media awaits the Beijing Olympics 2008, a group of friends from London set off on an epic journey along the ancient Silk Road trading route to China. Armed only with a sense of humour, they run across the dangerous terrain of central Asia via Turkey, Iran and on to China, carrying not the Olympic torch but an alternative flame to represent global warming. A UK and China cast interweave this story with Chinese mythology, drawing from zaju theatre of the Jin Dynasty, including dance, acrobatics, comic patter and music. Classical Beijing Opera actors will use their skills in exciting new ways to delight, inspire and enthral audiences of all ages. (90 mins, no interval, 6 on stage, 12 on the road.)
WRAP-AROUND Silk Web will spin an exciting arts projects for secondary school aged children that will develop alongside and compliment Running the Silk Road, introducing them to the heritage of the Silk Road and the Olympics. The artists will work with classes on one of the creation or destruction Myths as seen in Running the Silk Road. There will be opportunities for the children to explore their response to the story, through a particular art form, and to the larger picture of global warning.
