PERMANENT STAFF Artistic Director Sean Tuan John
Creative Producer Siân Thomas
ARTISTIC POLICY Welsh choreographer Sean Tuan John creates movement-based performance work that explores contemporary urban culture and experience through idiosyncratic dance, evocative video and excessive “acting”. Special interests include solo work, site-specific performances and collaborative work, focusing on themes of social commentary, the trash aesthetics of pop culture, psychology and in depth investigation into character-based dance exploration. Sean Tuan John has a strong history of European co-productions and collaborations to create work for the conventional stage, site-specific events, film and television.
REVIEW EXTRACTS ‘Sean Tuan John may yet be to choreography what Dylan Thomas is to poetry.’ The Guardian
‘John is not only a master in sequencing eccentric steps and modifying the normal into chaotic body motions with high perfection, he also know how to grab the audience’s attention.’ Western Mail
‘Humourous, intelligent and performed with an infectious precision and honesty.’ The Times
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS How I Faded and Disintegrated A distinct and uncompromising performance fusing film and dance to create a visually arresting socio-political performance that precariously treads the line between live art and theatre. At the heart of the production is a filmic and physical investigation of how we “view” and “disassociate” with the eventual physical and mental decline of our bodies. (1 on stage, 2–3 on the road.)
Kill the Klowns Delving into the desolate purgatory of three vaudeville has-beens, Kill the Klowns promises to entertain and disconcert with its unusual cocktail of disjoined dance, evocative text and a large dose of dark humour. (60 mins, 3 on stage, 4 on the road.)
The Magic Doors A visually dynamic and highly energetic dance show for five- to seven-year-olds based on the idea of entering and exiting different worlds. (40 mins, 2 on stage, 3 on the road, with accompanying workshops.)
WRAP-AROUND Creative educational situations with children and adults, focussing particularly on the fusion of professional and participatory approaches to create new presentation and working methods.
