One Small Step

The Oxford Playhouse production One Small Step is due to visit USA, China and India in the coming months, as part of a global tour of this innovative work which has been hugely popular with international audiences. The play features a cast of just two actors who take on a wide variety of roles to tell the story of the race between America and Russia to get the first man on the moon.

One Small Step was one of the big successes of the British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase 2009 – our biennial presentation of cutting-edge British performing arts work. Over 200 international programmers, venue and festival directors from more than 50 countries attended the Showcase, all looking for the UK companies and artists that they believe will be suitable for their audiences. Since their inclusion in last year's Showcase, Oxford Playhouse (in partnership with the British Council) have toured One Small Step to countries all over the world including Syria, Australia, Singapore, Lebanon, Tunisia, Morocco, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Palestinian Territories, Egypt and Sri Lanka.

In addition to performances of One Small Step, the cast and director have been holding post-performance discussions with audiences, inspired by the content of the production and also the artistic process behind the play. The actors, Robin Hemmings and Oliver Millingham, have also run master classes with theatre makers and students in a number of countries.

One Small Step is written by David Hastings and directed by Toby Hulse. The cast of two take you on an action-packed trip to the moon bringing dozens of characters (41 to be exact) to life in a brilliantly inventive exploration of the space race. From the first dog to be rocketed into space, to the moon landing and beyond, One Small Step is full of emotion, intense moments, epic achievements and humour.
