Makdisi was born in Jerusalem and grew up in Cairo. She received her BA at Vassar College (US) and her MA in English literature from the George Washington University in Washington DC. She also did postgraduate work at London University. She taught English and Humanities at the Beirut University College (presently the Lebanese American University) from 1972 till 1995. She is a member and former Secretary-General of the Lebanese Association of Women Researchers. She has written on Arab women and Arab feminism, literature, and the Egyptian cinema and edited Jerusalem Memories by Serene Husseini Shahid (Naufal, 2000). She is the author of Beirut Fragments: A War Memoir (Persea Books, 1990) which was selected as a New York Times Notable Book and Teta, Mother and Me: An Arab Woman’s Memoir (Saqi Books, 2005). She lives in Beirut and is currently completing a volume of short stories.

Douaihy was born in Lebanon in 1949. He is Professor of French literature at the Lebanese University in Tripoli.
He is the author of four novels and a collection of short stories, Al maout bayn al ‘ahli nou’as, (Dying Among Sleeping Parents) published in 1990. He is also the author of a short story written in French L’Ame de la foret, (Forest Soul), which won the Saint Exupery Prize for Youth Literature. Autumn Equinox also won the prize for the best translated book in Arkansas University (US). He has translated many books from French into Arabic

Abouzeid was born in Morocco in 1950. She studied at the Mohamed V University in Rabat and the University of Texas, Austin. She began her career as a radio and TV journalist and also worked as press assistant in government departments and in the prime minister's office. A former Fellow of the World Press Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota , Abouzeid left the press in 1992 to dedicate herself to writing fiction. She is the author of two novels, two collections of short stories, two travel books and a biography. Her work is translated from Arabic into English, German, Dutch, Spanish, French, Italian, Turkish, Urdu and Maltese.

Nalluti holds a BA in Arabic language and literature and is also an MA researcher at the University of Tunisia. She was a literature teacher before joining the Ministry of Cultural Affairs as head of the Creative Support Department. She then joined the Ministry of Education as Deputy Director of the General Inspection Department. She lives in Tunisia and is an active creative writer.
